Choosing a Piercing

STEP 1: Deciding on the Piercing for YOU

  • Rings are better for ears and for most body piercings
  • Different body types require different types of body jewelry, with different sizes and thickness. Jewelry which is too thick can cause keloid or abscess.
  • Jewelry should be made of 316L or LVM surgical stainless steel, 14-karat or 18-karat solid gold, titanium or niobium.
  • Gold-filled, gold-plated or sterling silver are not suitable. They can chip, tarnish or degrade in a piercing.
  • If your skin is sensitive to metal, monofilament nylon or Teflon may be used.
  • Longer barbells are used for tongue piercings to allow for swelling. They can be replaced later.
  • Don't use jewelry with nicks, scratches, or irregular surfaces
