There's not a whole lot of action in this part of the forum, so I figured I'd just make a new topic for this...please don't eat me Razz .

Anyway, just watched "Death Proof" last night and....it was BADASS. The first crash seen with the 4 separate takes blew my mind (I watched that part like 10 times ha ha ha). And the ending was a lot of fun. Yes, it was a little slow in parts, but I think it just served to help the audience get to know the characters a little bit so that the intense scenes are just all the more intense. All in all, loved it. We'll see how Planet Terror compares.

Glad you enjoyed it. I thought the ending was hilarious as well, and I'm still stumped how anyone could NOT like a movie with the main character named "Stuntman Mike".

It easy to NOT like it. The first 20 minutes were AMZING. after that? It kinda lulled in mediocraty. Definately boring and definately a bit over-rated.

It was supposed to be an homage to "grindhouse" cinema and B-movies of the 70's. That being the case, it shouldn't have had an over-lying theme of "Female empowerment". I'm not about "Holding down the ladies", but I know more than a fair bit about the era of films that QT is supposedly "paying tribute to" here, and they, in all seriousness, have little or nothing to do with "Building up the female gender".

Beyond that, the "grindhouse" film which QT claims to be "giving props" to with this one were RARELY dialogue-driven films that were full of film-references and in-jokes. To be honest, after the first 20 minutes and the 1st big action set-piece, it just bogged down witrh the scenes of the girls and their conversations. QT really spent a pile of time "getting to know" the characters in question, yet another "no-no" when it comes to this type of film.

Over-all, i was much more into "planet terror" as far as the 2 fliks in "Grindhouse" goes. It had a ton more action and was very much just a "thrills for the sake of thrills" action-pakced horror flik.

Planet Terror was release in the US with Death Proof under the movie title Grindhouse. It was a Rodriguez/Tarantino team up to pay homage to old 60's style exploitation films.

CxCx> I see what you're saying completely, I guess I just feel a bit different about it, yes I'm a Tarantino fanboy but honestly I didn't like Jackie Brown that much.

I went and saw "Grindhouse" in theaters with a guy that hangs on QT's nuts hardcore (I, myself, definately don't hate the guy. "Res dogs" and "Pulp Fiction" of 2 of the best films of the 90's IMO). That being the case, he just ckept going ON and ON about how AWESOME Death proof was. I just didn't get it.

fast foward about a week : I get a call from said friend. He simply says "man, ya know, the more I think about it, the more I didn't dig Death Proof", and proceeded to go on about how he felt it was unfocused, unbalanced, and that Stuntman Mike was horribly mis-used by the end.

I think he just really WANTED to dig it, ya know what i mean? I just think that, after the 90 minute roller coaster that was Planet Terror, Death Proof just seemed to lag on and on and on. It's a shame, like i said, because i REALLY dug the first 20 minutes (the opening in the bar through the first chase set-piece were just incredible)

Yeah I know what you mean, I've been there with a few movies as well. Oddly enough though when I left the theater I sorta felt let down and described the movie pretty much just like you did. I watched it again and I hate to sound like a movie snob (I'm really not trust me) I appreciated it more and more the more times I watched it.

I really think it would have lend itself more to the "Grindhouse" experiment had it come first. I chatted with a guy who works with the Weinsteins and from what he told me it was a pretty unanimous decision amongst everyone that it should in fact come first but Harry and his brother made the decision to put it second.

It's a shame the movies didn't do that well at the box office because I would have loved to have seen Thanksgiving and Machete back to back.

I enjoyed the double feature movie for what it was. Nothing I would write home about though...
