For my first tat I'm looking to get a black and gray of st michael on my arm (shoulder to elbow). Its going to be based off of an image I found online but I want an artist that can really expand off a picture and my ideas and come up w/ something unique. I've gone through dozens of portfolios online, including the household names (i.e., gupta, kern, o'donnell, booth, etc.) but maybe someone on this board is familiar w/ some1 in the brooklyn area a little less famous that does brilliant work. Willing to dish out the cash but I'd rather not have to wait a year. Thanks in advance.
maybe stephanie tamez

nick caruso would probably do you right -- www.nickcaruso.com.
and, though he's not in brooklyn, have you looked into ave caesar? he's a bit more under the radar than some of the guys you listed but has the fineline b&g down pat and might be game for a religious tattoo (cause someone like kern or booth won't touch them) -- www.caesartattoo.com.

I don't think any of the regulars here have, but I do sort of know someone who does and he's very happy with the result.

decided to go with caesar, met with him yesterday ... we talked for a couple hrs (90min on the tat and about 30 non related stuff), i went in w/ one direction in mind and he took me in a totally diff. one, his insight/adivce/creativity was great, i could tell i was talking to an artist ... he seems like a great guy and he was reasonably priced as well ... anyways thanks for the great tip I would have never found his place otherwise and if anyone is interested i'll post a pic afterwards, 1st session in a couple weeks probably
