Hello, getting the outline of my half sleeve next week. Its going to be traditional Japanese black and gray, starting from my wrist and finishing at my elbow.

Eventually i'm wanting to make it into a full sleeve. With that in mind is it best to start at the top? As a number of people have told me this is the best idea.

Is a half sleeve from wrist to elbow quite an uncommon tattoo? Cant really find many images on google. Dont want it to look out of place and unfinished.

Also, where should i finish it, just below my elbow, or just above?

Thanks in advance.

All this is best to discuss with your artist. Where are you located so we can recommend artist if you don't have one already.

edit. OK, if you are getting the outline then you must have the artist :P

Yeh lol.

WHat is your thoughts on starting at the bottom. Is this a silly idea?

Dont wanna walk around with a tattoo that looks out of place.

Remindes me of a gauntlet. I like the Idea, and the skin may be better on the lower arm. An outline alone might look odd until finished, but you will get around that.

What are you planning on getting? This is my advice, if you have already decided to get a full sleeve, why don't you just start on that now? Only because say you are getting a dragon or something large, you can then have it cover the entire arm instead of just half? Just a thought... Who's the artist?

Im getting a Koi and a hannya with wind bars and water. Looking to get a dragon at the top at some point.

Still dont quite know whether its going to look odd and out of place.

Anybody else know anyone/have a wrist to elbow half sleeve?

i think a bottom half sleeve by itself looks a bit weird, yes.

but i also think looking weird is just part of being a collector. it can take a while to bridge everything together.

so the bottom line is that if you wanna start with the lower half then do it. just make sure it's organic enough to have your dragon upper half smoothly added on later.

You’re easily persuade… If its done well then that will overcast the fact its done ‘in reverse’ if you will… but again if you plan to start collecting, like actualfact said they will eventually bridge together so who cares…

Who's doing it?

Cool thing about doing it that way is, when you're wearing short sleeves, everyone will assume you have a full sleeve. 8)

Is this the artist?

If he is, he isn't qualified to do Traditional Japanese tattoos. If I may be so blunt.

i think getting a tattoo in a obvious place makes you stand out in general. i say run with it and get it on the lower arm first. if its a good artist and you like the work then why not show it proudly

I personally think you should start from the top, but more on principal than asthetics....
