I think this is something someone brought up wanting on here at one point, or something like it, and it popped into my head while watching The Last Samurai, so... I drew it.

I think it would help if you used a picture of a real koi as reference.

I did, along with two tattoo designs that had elements that I wanted reference for.

Don't take offense as I'm just trying to critique, but it really doesn't look at all like you referenced a real koi. It's pretty stubby, is missing fins and has misplaced fins, and lacks flow. The body flip is awkward and the scales don't match up at all (a more robust dorsal fin would have helped hide that if you're having trouble getting scales to match along the spine). Stylized koi are fine and all but yours just looks a bit too far out of the basis of reality to chalk it up to stylization.

mmk. Thank you for your critique. I feel I've improved 100% on my koi designs from before, but apparently I need to do that 3 more times.

Your artwork has definitely improved over the years, sure. It's important though to realize that you (I'm using 'you' in the general sense) have never learned enough. There is no point where one should ever be done learning.

I know, its just very disheartening when your proud of how far you've come, when you've improved so much, only to be told it looks nothing like its supposed to and you have to go back to the basics.

It's a step in the process - why not be proud of it for what it is (an improvement over previous work)?

Besides, would you learn anything if I just blew a ton of smoke up your ass?

While getting coffee I realized how arrogant that last bit sounded, and I didn't intend for it to. I am by no means an expert on anything, and I still have a lot to learn too. What I meant was, getting lots of 'oohs' and 'ahhhs' and having everyone stroke one's ego doesn't help anyone to learn or grow.

Critique is part of the art process. You gotta have pretty thick skin.

Sorry guys, I'm just having a really bad week, and this was one of the few things I did this week that I was happy about, and well.. the straw that broke the camels back and such.
