How can I tell if my lip is infected? I got my lip pierced in mid Feb in South Korea, I had no problems with it kept it clean, and did the normal cleaning steps for 3 wks. Last night (its been 24 hrs) I went to the shop I got it pierced at to change from a stud to a ring and ever since then its been killing me. My lip feels the way it did when I first got it pierced, especially on the inside. I know the shop is clean (Ive had several friends go there for theirs, and she sterilizes all the rings, and shes uses sealed needles) but due to the language barrier here and not having access to a "professional" piercer I have no idea how to tell if this is getting infected. Or if this is a normal feeling.
I guess I should add too that I wont be returning to the states until next fall, so the internet is the best bet for me....
Help?!?

That seems a little soon to have the piercing changed, I waited a lot longer than that to change mine and never had any issues.
I did however change my Monroe piercing too soon, it got infected and I needed to take it out.
Pic?

There isnt any puss or gunk coming from it, its just swollen again. Should I put the stud back in so my lip has room to swell? Or is leaving this in the best option for me?
pics of both sides?

just follow the initial instructions. You will prob be fine though. If it doesn't get better in 48 consider having a doc look at it. Dont switch it, just dont fuck with it and keep it clean. Only drink water, no alch or smoking. Can also consider sucking on ice chips to keep the swelling down.

So I thought I would come back to my post and update whats been happening... It got better after a couple days of soaks. but now that Im sick it seems like it got a lot worse. (ive been sick for the last couple of weeks). Now I KNOW its infected since the area is swollen and red and it hurts quite a bit when i move my mouth. So should I go to the doc and get some antibiotics?

Uhm, AIDS free here. Not that it matters... but its just allergies, and everytime i start feeling better it rains, and makes me sick again.

Is it safe to be taking the antibiotics, and be doing the other cleaning as well? Including rinsing with 60/40 mouthwash?

I just want the damn thing to heal so I can put in jewelery from a trusted place back in the US...

60/40 mouthwash? WTF is that?

I swear if you tell me its an alcohol based mouthwash I'm going to virtually kick you in the uterus and pray to a God I don't believe in that the infection gives you Aids.

60/40 mouthwash.... 60 percent mouthwash and 40 percent water. I wont be using alcohol mouthwash anytime soon.

Allergies != sick. If rainy weather is making you sick, I would say trying to hold onto a piercing with such a weak immune system is probably not an awesome idea. How long till you're back in the states?

Even under the best conditions, an ear piercing may develop an infection. If any of your piercings look red, swollen, or pussy, its probably infected.Mild infections can be treated easily enough at home. You should wash the infected piercing with antimicrobial soap, followed by a sea salt soak.
