| Name's David. Been tattooing about two years now. Been into machine building for a bit longer than that (just trying to have some kind of hand's-on to familiarize myself with the equipment prior to getting an apprenticeship). My tattooing's pretty limited so I'm always looking for different and more efficient ways of doing thing. And that's pretty much that.. |

| Nope: while looking around for an apprenticeship, I started trying to build machines. Then I landed an apprenticeship; and since my mentor moved out of state I've continued tattooing for the last two years. |

Got a few photos waiting for the ok in my profile. Can't yet figure out how to upload photos directly into this post, but most of my recent work's on Facebook under the name Catamount Studio.
(I'd also like to state at this point that I really hate Facebook; but there it is, so be it) |

The ones you have waiting for approval will take 1 to 798 days to get approved. There is only one person that can do that and he is in a Russian prison so he can't log on very often. I think he must trade some 500 desserts for the privilege of the internet.

dont know quite what to say, I never approve of working without an apprenticeship, ever
your artwork is ok, your tattoo works shows you need instruction desperately, you better go find some, you need it _________________ 220 hours of art that lasts a lifetime, I cant tell you what it means to me, it is everything about me

My tattooing is definitely the low end of mediocre. Customers that come in looking for something I feel is out of my skill range get referred to a couple other shops in the area that have tattooists that are extremely competent.
As for working without an apprenticeship: I didn't. I apprenticed with Don Kincaid at American Tattoo Co. in Portland PA prior to his moving out of the area.
The long story is that I had a few 20 year old tattoos that I recently though could use some dressing up; and having experience with various artforms, thought I was up to the task myself. After attempting to embellish a couple areas on my own skin I realized that my ability was about as crappy as the kit machine I'd purchased for the task. I did some homework and found there to be a lot more to the trade than I was capable of, so I ceased any more tattoo attempts and started trying to fabricate machines from scratch to see what I could learn about the equipment. I got feedback on them by giving my build attempts away to local tattooists. When I met Don, he thought it was amusing that I was trying to make machines. I gave him a couple and he gave me feedback and had me fix them until they worked correctly. He also thought my drawing ability was up to par, and offered to have me stick around and learn from him. I got to work with him for about a year before he moved, and he encouraged me to set up on my own and continue. So I've been working out of my own shop (locally inspected and licensed) for about two years, but as pointed out, my work's lacking and it's real hard to further one's self in isolation. So my plan for the near future is to either get an experienced tattooist in this shop with me (if business will support it), or shut up shop and go find work elsewhere so I can be in an environment that'll give me people to learn from. |

You really have no business touching ANY tattoo equipment until you have an apprenticeship and your mentor tells you it's time. So you already went about that part ass backwards.
But that said, your work doesn't look bad. I see potential there, with or without any further formal instruction. Once you reach a certian stage, only time and experience will improve your technique. Looks like you are at that stage already. I'd say just find a shop where you can get a lot of steady work and keep at it. Remember everyone sucks at first, but the best grow past it and continue to improve. _________________ Matt Crunk

warmest welcome I've ever seen for a "non-studio tattooist" (is that the polite was of saying it, or what?).
Good luck with the search. |

fe: there should be more in the "tattoos and related illustrations" album on "Catamount Studio" page. I'm a computer fucktard, but as soon as I decipher how to post pics directly to the threads I'll leave my work efforts on the slab for anyone who wants to to tear up or throw pointers at.
I am licensed, I have gone through an apprenticeship; but I definitely acknowledge that I am barely adequate and am currently working in a shop by myself so my progress is at a snail's pace. I'm also no spring chicken when it comes to learning a new trade so my chances of ever being great (or even really good) are pretty goddamned close to impossible. So as opinions are being formulated, let it be known that I have a realistic view of my capabilities. So if my work sucks, tell me and tell me why, and I'll be grateful (and won't make excuses like, "well I did that tattoo last week; this week I'm much better").
Looking forward to participating in the forum |
