Greeting everyone, I am about to get my first tattoo in about a month! I have a rare birthmark under my waist that is fairly big called Beckers Nevus...Its a dark tan color (I'm white) and it extends from my hip to just above my knee cap.
I plan on getting a koi tattoo because the stiletto of the birthmark is perfect for it. I am nervous how much itll hurt(mostly muscle on my thigh) along with the birthmark being extra sensitive...anyone ever experience a tattoo over such a birthmark? My dermatologist said it should be fine to get inked, though I dont take her word 100%..

I would like to post pics of the birthmark to give ya guys a idea of what I'm working with(not sure if half my cheek would get my account deleted, lol). I'm not looking to cover it up, but to celebrate it. Anyways, I'm stoked to get my first tatt, and would love to hear suggestions from ya guys!

Yeah, pictures would help a lot here. Are you planning to turn the whole area into one large koi, or use the darker patch as a pool of sorts and have several smaller fish?

I was thinking of having just one large koi...I would like to "celebrate" my birthmark rather than cover it all up(so in the future I can have it checked for skin cancer)...any ideas welcomed! I was thinking of having the tail end be towards my hip with the head of the koi spiraling down, right above my knee.

I dont have much input other than the fact that's one hell of a birth mark.

unless you are going to go with a straight outline with no color, I don't know how you'd be able to see what's going on underneath is later.

Not that a straight outline only would be a bad thing . . .

a......koi?
I'd rather keep that birthmark rather to have a fucking koi polluting my body.
And why can't you check it for skin cancer now, before doing a tattoo etc. etc?

I dont understand what you mean...whatya mean see whats going on underneath? I was thinking of getting a basic black outline..no color.

bertnaked- I thought a koi would be a nice piece to get done...do you just not like koi's or do you think it wouldnt go well with the birthmark? And yeah, I have an appointment with a dermatologist to get it checked out first so I'm thinking they can do a biopsy or something.

To be honest, koi is hust about to be the new "tribal" in the tattoo-world. Since when people figure out they want a tattoo just to have it done, it's either a koi or letters they will ask for. Use your imagination.

Do you like traditional~ish japanese tattoos? My vision of tattoos are a bit drastic. But one lonely tattoo on that spot of yours would look kind of weird, since this also will be your first tatto, right?
But if you're into trad. japanese tattoos, it's quite common to have that area+more tattooed into one piece.

I really hate koi-tattoos, but if you're looking for something like this, and you FUCKING LOVE FISHES it's allowed wink

In my opinion, if you want a tattoo at that place, you have to go big to make it work out.

If you're worried about what might happen to your birthmark 10-20 years from now (and I am unaware that/if birthmarks are more suseptible to cancers, etc) then having a outline tattoo, with no color and little or no shading would be the way to go - just as you are apparently intending. You won't get any dimension to your artwork, but we've all seen plenty of awesome outlines . . .

Bertnaked- thanks for the suggestions! I just figured a koi would go well with the shape of the BM, aside from liking japenese artwork. I was originally thinking of getting a dragon ironically, but I also want as much of the BM to still be visible for the future. Was thinking a black outline would look good, along with designs around the koi being the design wont completely surround the BM(I like the designs below). The two pics below are sick, but again it I want the BM to still be visible. Deff would hafta go big so most of the BM is outlined, but not as big as the two below...You have any ideas of any other designs that could take the shape of the BM without having to fill it all in? Heres the designs I was thinking of getting around the koi(not sure what to call this type of design).

Stubarber- Yeah deff an outline would be the best way to go I thought too... Some real nice outlines of kois out there, just hoping it will go nicely with the color of my BM. B)

I like the way you are thinking of going with this. Not sure what to call those patterns specifically, but you'd just need to carry them in to the artist to use as reference and he/she could adapt it to the specific shapes you've already got.

Trick is going to be finding a quality artist for this. Where do you live?

Its jacquard in case you ever want to look it up some more!

http://www.google.ca/search?q=jacquard&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&hl=en&tbm=isch&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi&ei=YjVuT5KrBsq30AGM6vjJBg&biw=1049&bih=572&sei=ZTVuT4zLNarV0QGI05C3Bg

Have you talked to an artist yet? Your scar has a flow at least. Its pretty traditional to get water around a koi, maybe some rocks!

I live in upstate NY. I'm going to a reputable tattoo shop called Shamen's Den...ever hear of this place? Shawn himself is going to be doing the tattoo...I had to schedule the date months in advance(4/20 is the day). I must admit, I am getting nervous...the birthmark indeed feels more sensitive with the skin a tad raised...hoping all goes well. Also as expected, the dermatologist advised against it, due to the tattoo making it difficult to notice changes in the skins color(moles)...though I would think with an outline and minimal pattern around it, the skin would still be visible to keep an eye on. The unfortunate thing about beckers nevus is that its uncommon and not little info out there. I came across a few websites where others with BN had it tatd, but no followup.

green_girl- Thanks, good find!! I did talk to an artist, he agreed that a koi would flow with the birthmark fine. He also had a sick koi design on his wall, so I hope it turns out just like it! Perhaps the jacquard could be the water in a sense...may even opt for one of those cool looking flowers...back off haters! Lol.

I was also wondering about any markers/paints out there where I could sketch up the birthmark myself, just to see how I like it. Any suggestions besides permanent marker?

Are you just getting a small outline, or doing the entire leg?
