I'll bore you all with the details. I was in the USMC Reserves. Sparing some details I ended up landing ticket to A-stan. During pre-deployment training I blew my knee out. Someone else from the reserve unit I was going to be assigned to after my deployment that had volunteered for a trip got deployed in my place after my injury.
Long story short, he didn't make it home. Ever since then I feel I've been living my life on borrowed time at his expense.
I've had a few vivid dreams about it while I was on ambien, want to turn it into a tattoo. Basically I'm thinking about getting a black tattoo. The grim reaper/angel of death holding a severed head fixed to an hour glass with a scythe in the other hand. Maybe add some red to the sand in the hour glass to symbolize that the time I have left on this Earth isn't mine, it was someone else's gifted to me through blood.
I'm not looking for an evil "badass" looking Reaper, something somber, yet chilling. I'm thinking something this big is going to require a good size piece?
I know asking about pricing is dumb but I'm going to do it anyways. I'm on a pretty low budget but getting this tattoo has been killing me lately. About what would I be looking at here? I was thinking back, side, ribs... something along that nature.
Also any references for good artists in the Milwaukee area would be appreciated, plus any additional advice for a noob. I've never stepped foot inside a tattoo parlor but I want to get a little educated first before I waste anyone's time. |

| That would look awesome if done right. Don't go for a budget tattoo. Start saving and keep mulling over your idea to perfect it. |

Save for a good tattoo now, or you'll be saving for a cover up (or laser removal) later. |

| This will be really cool if done properly so I have to agree with the guys above, save, save, save. If you end up with a shitty tattoo you will hate yourself for it. |

What about getting it done in parts? Is it a good idea to start and finish it within a given amount of time or could I get an outline going and have it finished/filled in as the money became available?
For personal reasons I'd like to get the ball rolling on this soon but I definitely don't want to skimp on any quality what so ever.
I am somewhat hesitant to get a reaper tattoo but I think it's fitting and if the artist can get the emotion I'm going for right I don't think it would look bad at all. |

You can split it up into sessions, but if you do that, try to get back in regularly (like a monthly basis at least). As stated in every post above, SAVE SAVE SAVE. This could be really cool. If budget is a major issue, don't get it on your ribs. Ribs take longer because the area is so stretchy. |

its easy to say that when it hasn't happened to you. each of us has our shit that we deal with, our baggage, our hardships... if something "life changing" or major hasn't happened to you. well you're a lucky s.o.b. but you don't have to be a dick. they find it important, and i think that any reason to have an appreciation for life is a good reason. _________________

fe, you don't have to bust my balls here. I wasn't trying to be a dick and there are many more people (including you at times) that speak their mind much more bluntly.
Just suggesting that if this is an traumatic memory and he truly feels that he is living his life on borrowed time and at someone's else's expense... well not a healthy way to go through life. Maybe a large tattoo reminding him of it not the best idea and maybe seeking out therapy and trying to leave the mater in the past would be an option.
It's not like I said anything mean and as with a anything on the internet, it is just an opinion. |

What the fuck does this have to do with getting a tattoo? I've had a ton of really bad shit happen, and I don't have tattoos to commemorate all of it. Other things(dads death) I waited years to get a piece, and that's because I have a bunch of tattoos and it seemed right. I wasn't on some hell bent mission to get my first giant tattoo as a memorial, like somehow that is gonna make anything better. If dude wants a tattoo for tattoos sake, that's cool, but if he thinks somehow its gonna be therapeutic, I believe he's delusional. Get over it isn't the worst advice in the world. _________________

oh core. i thought you were just being a dick, my bad. i understand now, try to get over it instead of getting a tattoo to remind you of it every day. i admit i was wrong you just down your throat.
i agree jay. it's not necessary to commemorate every eventful and important moment in your life with a tattoo, but that's what some people want to do. i certainly have more than a few "reminder" tattoos on my body. _________________

No worries, fe. I can see how my post could have been misinterpreted. I should have explained my position a bit more. Certainly hope the OP did not take offense. |

i just think it's odd that this is a tattoo forum and you have people trying to tell other people why they shouldn't get a tattoo...
who is anyone to tell another person why he or she shouldn't get a tattoo for WHATEVER reason... |

We are not saying don't get the tattoo. We are saying get it done right. If the money is an issue, then wait. Get it when the money isn't an issue and you can afford to have a GREAT piece done instead of a hacked up mess. _________________ People hear what they see - Oddisee |
