Hey everyone,

I'm designing my first tattoo and had an idea and wanted to see if it would be possible and if you guys think it would come out okay.

I'm getting an "E" for my university and wanted to make it look as if it was underwater. The tattoo will be on my shoulder.

Here is what the "E" looks like:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/8/86/Block_E_green.PNG/100px-Block_E_green.PNG

And here is the water effect I'd like:
http://t.wallpaperweb.org/wallpaper/miscellaneous/1440x1080/SwimmingPoolBottom_1440x1080.jpg

So basically I want the E to look as if it's in the bottom of the pool. What do you guys think? is it possible? could it look good?

Any help is appreciated!

I couldn't pull up the 2nd link but I assume you are talking about shimmer. I agree with reef. The idea is dumb. Let an artist come up with something or don't get a tattoo.

It's completely doable - with the right artist. Actually, my avatar leans in that same direction.

Personally, I would try to incorporate that idea into a more complex piece with other water elements, because trying to make just a stand-alone "E" look like it's under water will probably be quite subjective.

Get like a well done pair of swim goggles with the E logo on the band or something. Like a semi-realistic/semi-traditional set of goggles, with some drop shadow under them. A "E" alone is a boring lame tattoo. Seriously man. You can do 1000x better.

Something like this:

Get the band/frames you school colors and maybe the "E" in the band like a logo. Maybe have the goggles sitting on some roses or some filigree or something or both. That'd be sick.

Picture something like one of these with goggles instead of whatever the subject in as each. Did you win any metals. You could add a metal or two to the piece.

What about filigree plus the letter?

I drew this shit up really fast, but maybe it will make the letter more interesting?

I do like the goggle idea better though

I don't like the idea and think there is a good chance it will turn out looking really stupid. Keep brainstorming and get a talented tattoo artist involved in the process.

That's a pretty generic looking "E". I think what you are considering would end up looking like a distorted eye chart letter (you know, the big E at the top of every chart). What is the mascot of your school? Maybe a school mascot with a swim cap getting ready to dive off the platform would be more distinctive.

It will be next to impossible to pull off under water light shimmer in a tattoo. Maybe a really good artist that can do a 3d look can do it but every attempt I've seen always turns out looking like a tiger striped pattern. I would go with something along the lines of what Jay suggested. Maybe the school logo with some goggles.
