I'm new to the area and looking to get a half sugar skull sleeve in conjunction with some other work and the name Amy Black came up. She's super booked so she referred me to George Archer at Tantrum in Richmond. It's about 70 miles from my house in Newport News, VA. Anyone ever heard of him? Here is his link.

If you're going all the way out to Richmond, might as well try getting a session with Jesse Smith. He probably has a lot of clients but from what I've heard he's one of the best in the industry.
I actually live in Virginia Beach, which isn't too far from you. I'd say try your luck with some of the places here like Studio Evolve, Trinity, or Ancient Art. Those are probably the best three shops in the area, especially if you're just looking for a simple old-school tattoo.
I'd say that the artists at those places are just as good for that style as the George Archer that she referred you to. Thus, there wouldn't be much point to go all the way out to Richmond when you can get the same quality work closer to home. But if you want something elaborate and are willing to go all the way to Richmond, try seeing if you can book a session with Jesse Smith. |

Which "he"? George?
I wouldn't be surprised that he was available the next day. He's pretty average. |

jesse smith isn't taking any new clients. if you're into, and going for, a similar style then check out jason stephan or tanane whitfield.
if you're looking for a different style then describe it.
i don't see anything special about amy black or george archer. |

I first heard of George Archer back in about 2002, and I think then he had already been tattooing for some time. I like his style, super simple and pretty unique. I would get tattooed by him. Another good tattooer in Richmond to check out is
Marina Inoue http://www.ourtrespasses.com/
She learned to tattoo at Fly Rite Tattoo in Brooklyn under Elio Espana. She's a super rad chick, incredibly hard worker, and an excellent tattooer. |
