Hey stub,
I really appreciate your help....you made me realize what is out there. I have realized that I don't really like the cartoon or new school styles.
I was checking out samantha last night...people gave her very good reviews but heard a couple of bad ones as well. So not sure what to think of her. Do you know much about her?
I have started thinking about a different idea. I am from the east coast of Canada (Newfoundland) and am currently coming up with an idea to represent where I come from. As you know I am living in Calgary. I am from a small fishing village so I was thinking of getting something like a small fishing boat, fish, with the ocean as a background, and mix a couple of flowers in and kinda do it Japanese style. I want something to represent where I came from, but I would also like to to look cool as well. I want it on my shoulder and half way down my arm and I like black and grey style. Obviously I would have to bring it to an artist to come up with a design to make it look decent, but that is the basic theme idea.
Any thoughts on that idea or what I could do with it to make it better. I am open to suggestions, even if people say its stupid.
I am going to keep looking at different portfolios and different styles just to see the great artist out there. |

Also, a shop in Calgary "Smilin Buddha" had got a lot of good reviews. They don't have a website though (apparently the owner is old school) so I am going to have to drop by the shop to check out the artist's work.
Anyone know anything about this shop? |

You are definately travelling on the right path.
Continue to gather info.
I'm not familiar with any of these artists or shops. I just see artwork I like. I like your idea with the fishing boat, flowers and such a LOT. That just the type of imagry that will last and mean something to you without being just another symbol.
This guy is in Vancouver. Most of his work is black/grey but he's got some splashes of color (if that's what you want) and while he's not strictly Japanese oriented, he's definately Japanese influenced:
