I have a dilemma at hand here and i was wondering if anyone has experience with this also. I currently have a tattoo of a tiger on my left pec that extends slightly onto my left shoulder. I wanted to get a japanese half sleeve and combine the two pieces/put background around the tiger and fill in any unused space on my left pec up to my collar bone. I contacted Jess Yen (www.mytats.com) about it and he said he did not feel comfortable working on someone else's work. Does anyone have any experience with this and what is considered the norm in the industry with stuff like this? I'm almost a little worried that i will get similar responses from other artists, i personally don't see the big deal since any artist is not actually doing anything to the existing piece, only adding stuff around it. any thoughts?

I am a tattoo artist and shop owner and i also do not touch other peoples work. There has to be a good reason to go into something that is already started by someone else ie. death or artist moved or no longer tattoo's. Although it sounds like you dont want the actual ink touched just a new piece added around it. you might have some luck if you went and spoke to the new artist in person and actualy showed him what you want then he might see that you dont want him to touch anything the other artist has done.

i sent him a pic of my piece and the surrounding area but i only recieved a vague and relatively undecisive response in which his assistant said "he wasn't comfortable touching others work and might not take the case" but i will call and try again.

When you've got more customer's than you can actually get too then you've got choices.

Most artists will have no problem taking your money.

With Japanese style tattooing, there are predefined panels on the body. If there is something already partially in that space then it could impact what else you put in that space/panel... there's a good reason a great artist would not want to share that 'space' with another artists work.
