OK, my wife really loves the sound of Big Band and Ska. Like No Doubt, Reel Big Fish, Cherry Poppin Daddies and Brian Setzer Orchestra but doesn't know much beyond that. List me some bands that I can check out and get her into. Maybe get some CD's. I don't know to much about that genre.
thanks |

Swing-ish :
The Amazing Royal Crowns are a great rockabilly/jump swing band that are amazing.
Big Rude Jake has a couple solid swing-y records out
Royal Crown Revue are a great swing style band
Since most of the ska you mentioned was 2nd gen skacore stuff, I'll try to stick with that and 3rd wave stuff :
Operation Ivy : The godfathers of the first wave of skacore, taking the 2-tone sound and adding the west coast pop punk flavor
Less Than Jake : Florida's best poppy skacore outfit IMO
Goldfinger : As much pop punk as skacore, but still great regardless
The Flatliners : "Fred's Gots Slacks" is easily one of my favorite skacore tunes
Big D and the Kid's Table : Boston bred 3rd wave champs
Mouthwash : Look for the "1,000 Dreams" record from Hellcat Records. It's solid
Shleprock : Check out "(America's) Dirty Little Secret". It's a great mid-90's pop punk record with a bit of ska (particularly the single "Suburbia")
The Mighty Mighty Bosstones : Shouldn't need any further explanation. They're really the best there is at what they do
Leftover Crack : More aggressive than the other bands on this list, but still great (though not as good as the band they came from, Choking Victim)
The Skoidats : One of my favorite bands. They do '69 style skinhead ska, crossbred with Oi (hence the "Skoi" handle). Completely amazing.
If you want to check out more traditional sounding "Spirit of 69" or 2-tone era ska, or some more reggae falvored ska, I'd suggest :
The Slackers, The Pie-Tasters, The Toasters, Madness, The Specials, Desmond Decker, Jimmy Cliff, The Aggrolites, or Tim Armstrong's solo record _________________ "Sometimes a Tattoo is Just a Tattoo. umm, What do Jimmie's Chicken Shack have to do with swing or ska? I mean, I really dig "Pushing the Salminella Envelope", but I wouldn't say that they have ANYTHING to do with either genre of music mentioned. Same with Seether (Radio rock-y watered down crossbreed between nu-metal and seattle grunge), Simle Plan (Top 40 pop in Chuck Taylors), and Saving Abel (Nickleback immitation with a bit more Southern rock influence).
That said, SNZ are the shit. I'm actually kicking myself for not mentioning them myself. Damn, "Hot" was one of the first "90's ska revival" albums to hit it big at the time. A bit more traditional, and a bit more quirky than a lot of their counterparts, but completely amazing. _________________ "Sometimes a Tattoo is Just a Tattoo.
