|
|
I spent last Tuesday under the needle myself. This is the first color session on my right sleeve. About seven hours on the color so far, not counting the previous ten hours spent laying out and rough lining the entire sleeve a few months ago. One of my former apprentices, Greg Ross, now of Blue Rose Tattoo, is doing the work. He uses Neuma machines exclusively now, and it's my first experience with them.

| I fucking love it man. The colour is so vibrant. For those of us who aren't tattoo artists though Matt, what is a Nuema machine and what are it's advantages/disadvantages over more traditional ones |

| Nice gradations in the color. It must be cool to have someone you taught tattooing you. |

Without getting too technical, Neumas are pneumatic tattoo machines (as opposed to conventional electro-magnetic coil machines) which run on compressed air instead of electric current. _________________ Matt Crunk

| Is it a direct acting piston with valves or is it a rotory deal with an air turbine driving a cam of some sort? Must sound different |

It's basically a rotory, but it's much more forgiving than an electric rotory. It's also extremely lightweight and autoclavable.
Some say they hurt less than a conventional coil machine, but to me it felt about the same and healing has been no different. However the results seem to be smoother. _________________ Matt Crunk

Love the color
Are you seeing more artists switching over to the pneumatic devices...just curious. |

Seems to be a growing trend, especially among advanced new school artists who prefer an airbrush-like softness in their color work. _________________ Matt Crunk

the first word that came to mind was 'vibrant'...indeed....looks great....but here's a question for you, matt....what's it like to have someone you apprenticed work on you?? did you feel any urge to correct him or guide him?? just wondering.... ..his work is clean and solid...you did a good job mentoring him.... _________________ life is short...don't waste it |

My left arm has been almost fully sleeved for several years, and the work was done by at least four different artists. But I kept my right arm ink free until I was sure exactly what I wanted and who I wanted to do it.

Greg is one of those cases of "student surpassing the teacher" when it comes to bold, new school color work. He can now teach me a thing or two in that style, and is one of the few artists I trust enough to give carte blanche with my own skin.
Greg was a very gifted artist that started out as a client of mine. Then one day when I realized he was actually drawing up the designs he was bringing in for me to tattoo on him, I offered him an apprenticeship on the spot. He worked for me for five years, then opened his own shop, Blue Rose, about a year ago. The name Blue Rose Tattoo Parlor was actually one of two alternate names I had for Ink City when I first opened ten years ago, and is in reference to my very first tattoo: a blue rose. _________________ Matt Crunk
