I'm sure this has been discussed before, but I'm too lazy to go searching for threads and I know there hasn't been any about it in the past couples weeks.

Does anyone else find that question borderline offensive? Seems like it's always the first thing out of my family's mouth whenever i get new work done. It's never, "wow that's so beautiful" it's always, "how much did that cost you?"

I want to snap back, "None of your fucking business. Do I ask you how much money you make, how much the addition to your house cost, how much your new truck cost?" No, because it's not tactful. I don't mind so much when other people do it, along with the general line of questions: Where did you get it done, how long did it take, did it hurt, etc. but when it's the first thing out of someone's mouth it just makes me instantly regret showing them....

anyone else with me?

I'm usually not too bothered by small talk either, but there have definitely been times that question has been posed to me in a loaded manner. And when I say loaded I mean they're just waiting for me to give an amount so they can condescend to me and jump on my back about getting ripped off or wasting my money.

I wouldn't go up to my aunt or my friend and interrogate them about how much they just paid for their new truck and what a waste of cash it was. Because it's a shitty thing to do, and it's their money, their life, they can do with it as they please.

I just don't understand why people feel like it's ok to ask such a personal question and then criticize you. They should know better, especially when they're capable of refraining from vomiting out their opinion about other things.

not upset, just going on a little rant about it. I was thinking last night that by the time I finish getting my sleeve, I will have spent close to 5 grand on just my arm alone... To me, the money's a non-issue, but I can see how defending why it was worth it to me, could get real old real fast.

I would just give them a smart-ass response...something like "I paid about the same amount for tattoo that you did for your _______" Just fill in the blank with whatever strikes you at the moment. For those who are asking you the question about tattoos and they happen to be one who don't like them, just respond "I paid more than you would". But I agree with Jay...just let it roll off your back because you will never change their tiny little minds.
