Sorry, I didn't know what to call this, but I wanted to get some advice from all our artists here as I slowly string together something I can call a portfolio.
Rather than PMing a bunch, thought I'd just make a topic with it all There's a few wonky lines in one or two of these, cause when I went to make the whites whiter I had to redo some of them.. and it can be tricky to draw with a mouse sometimes.. hehe
Some line drawings:
And one with color:

I haven't played around with line weight at all yet. I would do so more if I could afford to buy some thicker lined pens, but as of currently I could barely afford the one I used for these...
And I HATE using a thing liner pen and making thick lines with it.. it sucks. _________________ "We shall flow a river forth to thee, and teeming with souls shall it ever be. In Nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritus Sancti." |

I've started illustrating one of my friends webcomics of sorts that updates weekly..
I'm not really looking for critique here, this one is my first attempt at doing something like this, just thought if some of you wanted to see it. *shrug* _________________ "We shall flow a river forth to thee, and teeming with souls shall it ever be. Very nice, Live.
I especially like the coffin and roses piece. Correct me if I am wrong, but they seem to be very old school inspired....which I am a bit of a sucker for.
I'd love to see the coffin and roses colored in and shaded, just to see how you would handle it.
Keep goin' girl, yer lookin' good! |

Keep practicing. There's a lot to nit pic, and I don't really, really want to.
Err that coffin - the hinge can't open on 2 diagonal sides like you have it - pick one, and the perspective will then work better. _________________ I for one welcome our robot overlords. |

My prob with the coffin piece was the relative sizing of everything. The skull is too big for the coffin and the roses are too big for any of it. As well as what GG noted. Also, the veins on the leaves are a little too long. I like the bold exaterated style of them, but I think a little less would helpI actually thought the coffin peice was the worst of them. I actually liked most of the other traditional peices.
Thought the Geisha was really good, as was the pirate. Maybe a little more weight in the lines, but I thought they were both smooth and they were hot.
The mermaid overall looks good, but everything is a little frumpy. Everything could just be a little sharper or edgier I guess. Overall it flows good to me, but the water and the chick need to tighten up and define their odies a bit.
Thats just me. I'm no artist... Overall, the work is nice. Keep practicing... _________________

as far as outlines go they're real solid, I would like to see some shaded and colored pics.
I also agree with what Evil said about their needing to be more edginess. I feel like you want to make the subjects soft and pretty and while that's exactly what you would want for certain pieces, you also have to realize and expect that a lot of people who want tattoos want them to have a sinister or frenetic look about them.
I would also ditch the colored pencils or whatever medium you're using and maybe experiment with water color. I've seen your paintings so I know what you can accomplish with a brush.. try to transfer over some of that knowledge with your tattoo stuff.
It's a great start and I think you could do well, you just need to get out of that insecure place of trying to fit in the box of traditional tattoo sketches and start having fun with it by adding your own flare to it. I can tell how cautious you're being and I really think you should just go balls out with it. if you're making art that you truly 'feel' and appreciate, chances are others will see the worth in it too. _________________

Isnt that with all flash? I've neder seen a piece of flash I liked. Anyone that has no idea of what they want and just walks in a shop and picks something offf a wall is retarded. Its like they are just settling for what they've got... |

As a layperson, I disagree about the retarded part. Especially with some of the old school designs, pieces of flash can be so iconic or so fully sum up the "flavor" of that style of art or sentiment that a piece of flash can be a great thing.
And if we're really being individualistic (as contradictory as it may seem) about it, we can acknowledge that sometimes it can be cool (not "cool") to have a design which is shared by others.
An example: I want eventually to get an old school swallow. There is just something so perfect and iconic about the design as seen on a thousand pieces of flash. And unless you insist, I'm guessing that most artists would put a little individualistic spin on it anyway. Flash helps the non-artistically gifted to communicate what they want.
You have a graphic arts background and don't need that, but it can be good for others. |

The coffin piece is still a little sketchy, working on that a bit still, will put it up when I'm finished
I definitely wanna get into watercolors, never worked with them before really, will hopefully get to that at sometime.. heh.. i hate colored pencils. >.>
I kinda like the size layout on the coffin one though.. I might make everything else a bit smaller.. but not much.. I dunno. Guess thats just me.
Thanks guys a lot though This is the sorta stuff I need. _________________ "We shall flow a river forth to thee, and teeming with souls shall it ever be. In Nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritus Sancti." |

| I think the coffin is the strongest design. A touch too much on the leaves maybe but I like the idea of extending them off the leaf. I wouldn't worry about being edgy, that's what boys want. There are all kinds getting tattooed now days. |
