So I got my koi finished up recently, and right now, think it looks flat. I'm wondering if my artist could go over with some grey wash to give the scales more texture. Will post a pic if I need to...

Definitely post a pic. Can't tell what you're talking about unless you do.

Here it is. I want something similar to the white scales with grey wash, but over the orange scales. Also, do you think the head could use shading?

Haha, it would help if i posted a link...

Personally, i think the piece's flat, graphic look is one of its biggest strengths. Adding grey wash to the scales, while adding a bit of depth, could wind up muddying up the over-all tone of the color and could wind up detracts from the power of the over-all piece.

I agree with Freddie. If you add grey wash, it will definitely muddy the overall image. Yes, it does look decidedly 2-d, but trying to make it 3-d after the fact will only detract from what's already there.

japanese is supposed to look relatively flat and no way realistic.

but the guy who inked that needs to retire, and some greywash wont save the piece. should have started with a yellow and stretched it to a deep red in the body.

too late.

I think the only problem really is the scales and head. The waves and fins are pretty well shaded in a noo-school stylee. I think it's perty cool because of the crossover between japanese subject and new school shading. And isn't that crossover just what the postmodern is allll about...
Put some of that black shading like the fins into the head and scales and I think it'd be a lot more satisfying.

Aiv, it sound like you're examining this piece by looking at it from a "traditional" view, while the artist obviously didn't. To me, I'd rather see a Koi like this than a traditional one for the 500th time. This flat, graphic, new-skool-y, bold, flat look is really interesting to me.

I'm happy with the way the waves turned out, and the background, I just wish it wouldn't have been a solid orange. I still like the overall piece, I was just expecting more. Live and learn I suppose.

Coming from a guy who got a Jesus tattoo...

Not very many people in my area have koi fish tattoos, or even know what a koi fish is for that matter. I've had people call it a catfish... Sad

Besides representing some tough times in my life, I like Japanese style tattooing, and that's pretty much why I got it.

My tattoos express myself. Now if I had praying hands ( which is fucking gay) I would understand you comment. But my Jesus tatto is ANTI Religious Surprised Aside from Jesus, all my tats and forthcoming shit is all out MY head...

Im not really knocking you, i just dont know how to express myself in the right way. Its still nicely done, and if thats your style, oh well

Oh my god what is your problem? You have insult everyone and your sex comments are immature and irritating. If you don't have something to say that at least somewhat relates to the post then please do us all a favor and shut the fuck up!
