Hi everyone.
Almost two weeks after getting my first tattoo, I feel the addiction's already kicked in and i've booked a second sitting for the coming Saturday.
The first design (Yin Yang Splash) I chose because I look at several aspects of my lifestyle and decision making as either 'black or white, with no grey areas in between'. For every good side, there's a bad... for every right, a wrong.. and where there's light, there's also darkness.
That said and done, i've been thinking of getting something done for my new tattoo but having some trouble getting ideas/inspirations regarding design. Can you recommend some good sites that have tattoo photos/ideas that would stick out? I have visited a lot of 'cookie cutter' sites that look like amateur stencil designs but rarely those that have proper tattoo art (with proper shading, color effects implemented, etc).
Besides Google image search and Deviantart, any ideas or tips where to get motivation from? Would appreciate the help - thanks in advance! |

you're definition yin and yang isn't entirely correct http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yin_and_yang
As far as motivation is concerned for a new piece... take a look at what other people have gotten.
I was inspired by a piece Nikko Hurtado did of a Sylvia Ji painting. So much so that i'm seeking out that tattoo artist to do a Sylvia Ji side piece. Before i saw his tattoo, i had no idea i'd have interest in the subject.
Though, i do think it is kind of foolish that you've decided to get a tattoo on saturday and still have no ideas |

For me, 90% of my tattoos come out of my sketchbook. I'll be scribbling, killing some time at the shop, or maybe an idea will hit me when doing a custom design, but, low and behold, something about a certain sketch will hit me, and I'll stash it away for later.
That said, another tip would be to hit your local Borders or Barnes and Nobles. Between their tattoo-related periodicals and art book sections, you'll be finding ideas-a-plenty _________________ "Sometimes a Tattoo is Just a Tattoo. Not everyone wants some giant piece of art. I tend to like things of sci-fi and fatasy in nature. Lots of vivid colour too. Right now im getting a sleeve of a big thunder/lightning storm drawn up, and im also considering a chest piece which im leaning toward being Carnage from the spiderman comics.
I always think about the idea for some time, deciding what i want, how i want it worked, where to place it, etc. By the time i come to my artist, i have most of the details decided. |

My thought process doesn't really apply to your situation, but I'll share it anyway. I'm not the type to first decide to get a tattoo then decide what, but rather I'd see something I'd really like as a tattoo then debate getting it. I actually waited a few years to get my latest tattoo, to see if I'd still wanted after period of time.
Booking the appointment without knowing what you want puts you in the hotseat to make a decision! If I were in the same position, I would probably hold off and wait until something caught my eye. Not that I would stop looking, but I'd rather look without the pressure of a deadline. That's just me though, as someone who wants a limited number of tattoos and wants to make sure I pick ones I'll be happy with. |

| The more tattoos I have gotten, the more my thought process about new tattoos has changed. I've pretty much exhausted my reservoir of "deep philosophical symbols" and am looking more towards esthetics. Working on a sleeve, and I am mainly just looking for some archetypal tattoo imagery. I love the tattoo esthetic - the looks of art which is specifically designed to be tattooed, and that is what I want. Just a nice classic sleeve, well-executed with a good artistic eye. So I chose an artist who not only is great at tattooing, but also has a good artistic sense, so I trust her judgment there. |

| I find an image I like and multiply it by three. I then double that image and divide by four. I find something I dislike and add it plus one. Then I add "est" to the end of it all. |
