|
|
I just got a full on forearm piece that I really love. It is highly visible unless wearing a long sleeve shirt. Being that it is summertime, short sleeves are the uniform of the day.
Since then, I learned that some presumably less hip people in my life think I am stupid for it and they don't hesitate to say things like - "What the hell were you thinking?" or "that was dumb to get such a big tattoo where everyone can see it".
Some of these people include my doctor, parents and my in-laws, who are a bit older, and I don't want to tell them to frig off.
Obviously, there is still a great deal of tattoo discrimination out there in the world, and I was hoping some of you can share your stories as to how you deal with it on a day-to-day basis.
Thanks, Jason |

Unfortunately you have just had a taste of reality. Attitudes about tattoos are slowly changing but there are still alot of prejudice out there. In time your famiy members and friends may become more acceptable of your tattoos. Large visible tattoos can still be a barrier to getting some jobs. I worked in upper management before I got my first tattoo so I made sure that I could keep it covered while at work. My supervisor was shocked that I had one but she is okay with it as long as I keep it under wraps. Good luck |

I am lucky in that I work from home building websites. If I am employed elsewhere, it is usually in an office with air conditioning, so long sleeves are ok with me there.
Personally, I love the way tattoos look. I just didn't realize all the extra attention I would be getting.
I guess you have to have a thick skin to wear a visible tattoo with pride. |

i think if you tell anyone giving you a hard time about it that you absolutely love it, and were confident in your decision to get it, they SHOULD respect that. Tell them you understand the discimination that may become of it, but you got it understanding the risks because thats who you are.
if a person cant respect your well thought out decision, then they are the wrong ones. not you. |

Honestly dude FUCK what people think. You going to cop discrimination wherever you go. You have highly visible ink and people are idiots so they're going to think you're a criminal. Don't worry too much about it.
Your friends and family should be a lot more respectful though. You need to put them in their place. Tell them it's your body and your life and that their negative opinions aren't warranted. |

I have pretty visible tattoos (forearms, hand, neck, etc) and, honestly, I forget they're there half the time. People are going to judge you on a plethora of things, so why waste time worrying about it? With the exception of potential employers, I can't see where someone else's opinion can matter that much, really. _________________ "Sometimes a Tattoo is Just a Tattoo. Here is what I am talking about. I already had the star, but just had the rest done. I think it turned out really well.
BTW... Thanks for all your good input. |

Sorry Phantom, but the ginger in my negates any potential "bad boy" attraction from females, lol. _________________ "Sometimes a Tattoo is Just a Tattoo. Not everyone wants some giant piece of art. Some People just want a Tattoo, small and simple, and that's great!" - Joe Capobianco |

my brother and i are the only ones with super visible tattoos in our family. the family doesn't care one way or another (for the most part...............) they were a little taken back by it at first, but they grew to like it and now they wanna know when of if i've gotten more
but i wear my sleeve with pride because man, i have to, i get a lot of looks, and it's too hot in the summer for anything with sleeves to cover it..
i don't think i've ever gone out and not had comments on it.. whether good or bad.. you just gotta deal with the decision you made.. wear long sleeves or stop bitching
you get used to it
i've found though that going to the bar is a hassle because a lot of girls give me the old evil eye because of the attention i get from it.. let's face it, a chick with big tattoos in the bar in the towns i live in isn't so much a common thing.. _________________
