| Is practice skin a total waste of money or does it do some good? |

| What does the person you are apprenticing under have to say about it? |

We have used and sell INKIT practice skin at our wholesale tattoo/piercing supply co.
I have used it before and it does give you a good idea on lineweight and learning how to use mags. The downfall is you have to work it in more then a regular tattoo. I found that out of all the practice skins, inkit is one of the best ones. It will never be like real skin but for trying out new apps. it will help. |

That stuff will prepare you for working on skin about as well as a round of minature golf will prepare you for winning a PGA tour.
I sometimes wish I had ca$hed in on the laziness and gullability of others, like the manufacturer$ of tho$e product$ did.
It sucks having a conscience and a soul, sometimes. |

| Thanks for the insight, i was actually at a convention and seen and was just curious about it. I'm not a tattoo artist i dont ever plan on being one, i have one tatto and just interested in the culture as a whole. It's interesting to learn diffrent things my friend is currently apprenticing and he had not asked about the skin, didnt seem like the way his mentor wanted him to go so i t wanted to know about it myself. Thank for the help. |

That's interesting. Too bad those who want to become tattooists aren't interested in learning the culture...and learning to do it properly, so as not to harm that which they profess to love so much.
Just a thought. |

| Thanks! I guess once you get a tatto by a well respsected artist who did an increadiable job. It makes you respect what they do. Ever since then it's just something that really intrest me. I've went to a couple conventions and amazed at what people can do. Once guy at the convetion said for parents to keep an eye on there children but if they stepped away for a second dont worry because it's a big family here and if someone does pull some Michael Jackson bullshit on your kid they'll just get your A** kicked. I thought it was a good defintion of the culture (a family). Good artists have respect and consideration for others and thats what outsiders dont understand. Anyway to all the legit artist out there keep up the good work! |

Sure, it can be fun to work with. It is a whole other medium to dabble in, but I don't think someone with no experience is gonna get much out of it. There is no substitute for skin. There is no such thing as practice. What makes tattooing unique is that when you touch the needle to skin, you aren't practicing...you are doing it for real. You can practice working on old cars that no one drives, anymore, if you want to be a mechanic. But you can't practice on skin no one is using, and there is no artificial substance in the world that will tattoo close to the same way skin will.
If you got used to using the technique necessary to put ink into practice skin, then tried the same technique on real skin, you would be butchering people up BADLY. |

| Although as badwolf stated nothing is the same as real skin I would have to say that practicing on the the practice skin couldnt hurt. Although it doesnt move and jump like a live person it will definately get the tattooist used to handeling the machine and following the stencil or drawing lines. Its not the teach all method but a step in a long process that will hopefully make the artist a little more comfortable before that first line on real skin. I like to equate it to practicing CPR on a dummy, its not the same as a dying person but its a start. |

So, in other words, it's just for target practice....seeing where the needles are going, and whatever. OK...I'll buy that.
So why not just use cheap grapefruits instead of that expensive crap? Neither feels anything like skin, so why waste the extra cash?
