I got my tattoo 4 days ago, on Sunday. Its on my forearm. Its still very sore and pretty red, mostly surrounding the eye of the feather. Its hot to the touch. I can barely touch it because its sore. Ive been doing everything the artist told me for aftercare and now it looks like I have burnt/gooey/bubbly skin. Is this a normal healing process? I've been using Aquaphor ointment. The rest of the tattoo seems to be healing fine, and is already peeling, although in some areas it looks as though the color has come out completely! What is going on here?!

It looks like I have a bunch of ointment layered on in the picture, but I only put a THIN layer on it and a few minutes later it turns out looking like this! After I wash it, it usually looks a little better and not gooey. But then it starts to get very stiff, so I put the ointment on it.

Have you contacted the artist for their opinion? I think I'd stop putting any ointment on it at all for now and see what happens.

There is no red. Just different shades of orange and brown you saw.

I havent contacted the artist yet. I was waiting a few days to see if I was just overreacting and it was healing normal. I think I will go see him today after work. I will definitely not be putting any further ointment on it unless the artist says.

Thanks both of you for the suggestions/help.

A thin layer where you can still see the moisture on the surface? Are you dabbing off the excess? How many times a day? Too much of anything can make it bubble up and turn mushy... which then starts a cycle of scabbing and stiffness/irritation.

I was instructed to apply the ointment after every time I wash the tattoo, which is 3-4 times a day. I apply dabs of the ointment on the tattoo and rub it over the surface until it is faintly shiny. After I put it on, the hard bubbles soften up and turn into what the picture looks like. Should I just stop using the ointment?

first. relax, everything you're experiencing is normal and there's no need to freak. Many of us have had scares healing especially for our first couple of ones.

remember that it is a surface wound and should be treated like one. keep it clean (mostly to prevent it from getting infected) and let it breath. make sure nothing rubs against it and keep it out of the sun and still water for the first couple of weeks.

You may experience bubbly skin, oozing, flaking, itchiness, soreness, bruising, numbness, heat, even some people get flu like symptoms if they've had a bunch of hours of work in one sitting. These are all normal and everyone heals differently, you will probably find that different artist and parts of your body heal differently too.

The one thing I can say for sure is that the actual process of ointment/lotion is really a trial and error thing and you won't know what works best for you until you've gone through it a couple of times.

I personally prefer to keep it wrapped for a couple hours, then wash it gently with my hand, warm water, and some unscented antibacterial soap. I will wash it until it all the plasma and goo is gone and i can actually feel the smoothness of my skin under it. i pat it dry with a clean towel and let it air out for about 5-10mins then apply a super light layer of aquaphor. if i notice that the aquaphor looks beady or sweaty on the surface i will lightly pat off the excess. For the first few nights I wrap it in saran wrap so it doesn't come into contact with the sheets.

for the first few days, I will wash it once in the morning, once in the evening, and do the same process: clean, pat, air, light aquaphor. If i notice that it looks or feels dry in the middle of the day, or I worked out or something I will again go through the wash and ointment process. I do this until it starts to peel. Once it peels i switch over to lotion 2x a day and whenever it feels tight or itchy or dry, i try to be very sparing with the stuff. if at any point I notice it being weird like it's starting to scab, I will discontinue the use of any product and just let it heal like any normal flash wound i.e. just leave it alone.

I would only get worried if it's raised, oozing pus, you start to see red marks trailing up your arm, you're running a fever, or it's UNBEARABLY painful. These are all signs of infection and you should see your health practitioner immediately.

Also, realize that it could take up to 2 months for it to heal completely and settle into your skin. in between you may experience things like a light coat of silvery/grey skin where it looks like color has fallen out and the ink has faded a bit. This is a normal process and if it still looks like poop after a couple months you can take it back and get it touched up.

Tattoos are pretty permanent, improper aftercare (with the exception of like running around in pools and 90 degree weather w/o sunblock for the first week) WILL NOT effect your tattoo as much as you think it would. If the artist did their job it should be VERY hard to fuck that ink up.

Also, welcome, tattoo looks cool, you got any pics of the whole thing?

this is for the tattoo artists in here.

It seems like stuff like this only happens with color pieces to me. The only problem I've ever had with a tattoo was a small color piece, I know a lot of reds will bubble up. Being analytical about it, its prob a numbers game as far as color vs B&G
Just wondering if you guys see more of this with color tattoos like I have, or just the same amount as B&G

with auqaphor you going to get a little more of that than with lotion, it's like getting a scrape...aquaphor makes it so that you don't really "scab", so the "scab" is going to look soft and gooey like that until it peels off...
