Since we've been talking about tattoo ratings lately, this question has been on my mind.
What percentage of tattooers do you think are: scratchers, below average, average, above average, outstanding.
I mean if most people out there are below average, it makes the common person who is getting inked for the first time to get a quality piece.
I think the majority out there are average or below.

honestly in my personal opinion and from being friends with quite a few artists, I think that there are FAR more artists who are only average and below average than anything else. I do know it is difficult to find an artist one could consider OUTSTANDING or AMAZING... Unfortunately, the number of scratchers seems to be increasing as well, which really sucks for those who end up going to them for their ink... So overall the percentage of Outstanding vs. Average vs. Scratchers is probably something like 10%/70%/20%.. my guess anyways _________________ ~Life is too short to have any regrets... I have found that in nearly every shop I've visited that the artists seem to build their careers on the rejects of the better artists. For example, I'm got new ink last Saturday and was really interested in this above average artist but most customers seem to be pawned off on the below average workers.
I've also noticed alot of people I know make spur of the moment tattoo decisions and end up going to some pretty shady places. Which keep the scratchers and below average shops and artists thriving.
15% scratchers/80% average/5% outstanding. But I think just being in college I've seen tons of terrble work. |

By definition, most artists are going to be average.
To be honest, I never really hoped to be much better. All I want to do is good, clean work that makes people happy and makes a few dreams come true. I don't need to be Jack Rudy to be happy with myself, just myself.
Most of the art I see, however, is certainly below average, and I can count the number of times I've seen an outstanding piece in real life on one hand. The Outstanding artists are definitely the smallest group, maybe even smaller than one percent. Maybe 5 percent tops for above average. But based on what I've witnessed personally, the amount of average artists can't be that high because at least 30 percent of the art I see on peoples' bodies is BELOW AVERAGE, and at least 5 - 10 percent looks scratched. So probably somewhere around 60 percent for the average work, at least in my area.
Maybe the good stuff is just all on peoples' asses so I never get to see it. _________________ ~ InkSlinger |

You know, Inkslinger, not everyone needs a Jack Rudy to do their tattoos. My first was a relatively simple piece and all I needed was a decent artist. I get many compliments on my ink and I do think that it is better than whan most people have on their bodies, that I have seen in person. My next will be a larger traditional piece on my back, and for that, I am seeking out the above average artist. I think it is important for the collector to know what skill level they need for the type of work they want.

VERY small amount of artists are top notch...
Majority or below average…
Depending on the type of tattoo you want should dictate which artist to go to. Even the best of the best have a certain type of style or tattoo they do best and that's the reason there famous. _________________

i think of tattooists the same as any other artist..
think of how many GREAT painters there have been over the years.
now think how many GREAT tattooists there are.. the ratio would be very similar i think.
i think of tattoos the same as painters etc.. youd pay $1000000 for the mona lisa for example.. so why wouldnt you pay $100000 for the same quality of work for your own canvas
thats my 2c |
