| Legally there should be tax on tattoos. If one shop adds tax then they obviously use that extra amount to pay the taxes. My guess is that the ones that don't add tax actually do pay tax as well but don't say they are charging it but actually take it out of what you pay anyway. I think that most tattoo artists rent their spot in the tattoo shop and pay a fee for that spot somewhat like a hairdresser or nail person. In that case they would be classified as independent contractors and have to pay taxes quarterly. Do they actually do this? Some probably do, but most probably don't. |

I dont know about other states but here in Ohio we charge tax, its a state law and is required and the percentage is set by the county that you reside in. Some states I believe do not tax services, such as tattooing, cosmotology taxi cabs etc yet. I would feel safe in saying that if they are required to tax you they will, I dont know anyone that would want to pay the tax out of thier own pocket for you, but may figure it into the price as stated above. Currently in Lucas County, Toledo Ohio we have to charge tax at .0675% on the dollar. _________________ www.needlemasters.com |

Taxes are already added to the artists fee. If they say there 125 dollars an hour then that's the amount you pay, taxes are already included.
Best way to understand this is like paying for gas. When it says it is 2.99 a gallon and you buy one gallon of gas it is going to cost you 2.99 not 2.99 plus 6% sales tax.
So, when you pay for an hour with a guy that costs 125 an hour you ONLY PAY 125 an hour. This is how a normal shop operates or at least SHOULD... _________________

I am a shop owner, and I don't charge tax, neither do any of my artists. My employees are independant contractors and can do what they like with their taxes(which should be filed quarterly with a 10-99 form) I do however include the price of tax into the tattoo, and make sure to keep all of my release forms and proper paperwork in order and ready for tax time. I don't think it makes a difference how you pay for your taxes as long as you are prepared to do it. By adding a set rate, I actually think is a very smart idea, so you know how much you have to set aside and not even touch that money so when you do pay uncle sam it's not a buttload. But I have a smaller shop in a small town , so i keep things simple.just my 2 cents _________________ Jamy Carlton

I think I may have been talking about a different thing here I was refeering to state sales tax, like you pay at every store when you purchase something. I apologize if I mis interprited the subject. If your refeering to tax's that an artist would pay as in federal tax yes it should already be figured into the price. Some shops do payroll and are liscensed as a corporation or LLC, and others are brokers with independent contractore who recive a 1099 yearly. In either case the price is the price and should include all costs in the quote. _________________ www.needlemasters.com |
