So I know that all over the world most animal symbolisms mean the same thing but depending on different cultures it can have a double meaning (ie bats are bad in western societies, in Asia they're symbols of good luck). But I was wondering if there was an animal that has no double meaning for strength/rebirth/determination.

I'm stuck on choosing between a Phoenix/bear/lion/wolf for my first tattoo.

well im pretty sure that the pheonix will always stand for rebirth considering it is a mythical creature. i would say rebirthing yourself takes some determination and strength. that being said. i dont like pheonix tattoos. get a bear or a wolf. its only importance is what it means to you, not the rest of the world. you should have sneaky-mitch allenden do it. i love his animal work.

Sneaky Mitch's work looks amazing though I can't afford going to England considering I'm in Texas and still in college ._. I'm leaning towards a photorealistic look that has bright color (not sure if this is even possible).

Why don't you like Phoenix tattoos?

Just my opinion, but I like phoenix's...I've played around with getting one on my right outer bicep/shoulder. That said, I they're done a lot (maybe even overplayed), and I don't think I'd get JUST a phoenix. There would need to be some twist to the theme to make it unique.

Just some thoughts I've played around with...it's not a big priority for me because I'm starting a half sleeve on my left arm in January, and I've got one or two other smaller tattoos I want to get in the meantime. So, lots to save for.

That's also another reason why I'm iffy about getting a phoenix. I've tried googling and there isn't a design that pops out at me.. Except for some tribal phoenix stuff, but that's kinda boring if you ask me.

I live south of San Antonio, possible cities I can get something done are: San Antonio, Houston, College Station, and possibly Dallas.

Also one more note; since I have tan skin will red/yellow/orange look fine on me or will it blur easier?

lighter colors will not show up as well, and they will fade faster with sun exposure.

Well, if you are in the San Antonio area, check out Adrenaline Tattoos on austin Hwy (NE side): http://kickasstats.com/Home_Page.php I would personally recommend either Nate (first choice) or Sonia (2nd choice)... Talk with one of them about what you want & I'm sure they can kick out some bad-ass suggestions. (I'm in San Antonio myself) Wink

I'm really digging Liz Cook's artwork mostly because it's what I was imagining the style of my tattoo to be. I'll look up Clint for anything Japanese..-y and Adrenaline tattoos seem to specialize in surrealism.

Btw I'm still a noob in trying to classify these things; if I'm wrong in something please let me know. Lol.

I guess one last final thought: if you're trying to narrow your choices of artists, how would you compare their portfolios? Like what would be the difference between an average and a great tattoo technique wise?

Clean, crisp, non-shakey outlines. Great color use, balance and contrast. Realistic, 3-D shading.

Don't overlook Austin, either. Many of the shops there lean toward American Traditional stylings, but there are some versitile artists there, too.

Ok now that's a cool idea. Could be an awesome sleeve if done by the right person.
