Hi all,
I have been getting my chest piece worked on for the last month or so in sessions. Lots of color and lots of detail going into this baby. My idea originally came from a Vladimir Kush Painting called Winged Ship. It has tons of meaning to me all the way through. When I first began to get it the colors on the original were my focus but now that we have gotten to the last phase, the butterflies, I don't know what the hell i'm going to color them in with. I want them to look more traditional tattoo style instead of like real butterflies. They represent endurance through change as well as beauty. That is why they are the masts of the ship. I would like them to look like something else from a distance possibly too.

Ive had a few ideas but they aren't satusfying me so far:
make them golden and have texture like a real sail
make them green and almost look like leaves but with color towrds the edges
i might give them more feathered edges so it looks like theyre wings from a distance and butterflies up close
Original

your thoughts on the colors?

I'm sure that's the idea. Those lines are mearly for reference. You probably won't see them when it's finished.

Damn, c'mon. Do you have to insult every person with a tattoo that doesn't fit your style? So what, fuckin butterflies. I don't particularly like it either but at least I'm not so judgmental to call everyone gay or a hippie or whatever else just because they don't have a horror-themed piece or something I don't like. To each his own. Holy shit, lighten up already and stop being such a dick to everyone with different tastes. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and that's why we're here and you've also admitted you're a negative and angry person but it sucks that you feel the need to take it out on so many people. Newbies and others ask for opinions but they just don't deserve to be verbally attacked by you just for asking a question. Have a nice day.

Well its definetly not my style but 10 points for originality. I like the idea of the green for the leaf look then a some color at the edge. But I would go with the original colors. I like the different colors for everything but you may also want to just let your artist, if you trust him/her, go loose. See what he/she can come up with cause you already got the originality down. Good luck, like to see the final peice.

Gay? Homo? Yeah ive been getting that...but its been less and less as the colors have been filled in Smile My life has been such a drastic and consistant metamorphasis that any kind of slander or hatred doesn't hit me so hard anymore. i like what I like and i encourage you to do the same. Although ive suffered through much pain hardship as, i can only attribute my knowledge and understanding to these past experiences. I used to look at life an entirely different way and it feels liberating to be able to express my art through my work, my friendships, and now my tattoo. To the haters I can only hope that you can seek understandinthrough the artistic meaning and relevance of the history and culture behind the butterfly.

"Even before the golden period of Japanese heraldry, the beautiful butterfly pattern was a favorite amongst warlords and their samurai, from as early as the Nara period (710 AD - 786 AD).

Displayed as crest or emblem on their armor, it appears to have been favored for the evolution from lowly caterpillar to noble insect.

Men of the ill-fated Taira (Heike or Heishi) clan -Japan rulers from 794 AD until 1185 AD- were particularly fond of the butterfly design.

The Taira, betrayed and outnumbered, were annihilated by the Minamoto clan at the great naval battle of Dan-no-ura in 1185. The surviving nobles committed suicide by jumping into the sea -graceful death considered preferable to a life in shame- but, according to one legend, their souls became butterflies. The Taira went down fighting, and so earned themselves the traditional Japanese admiration for brave and doomed warriors."
"The Ancient Greek word for "butterfly" is ψυχή (psȳchē), which primarily means "soul", "mind".[

"Many butterflies migrate over long distances. Particularly famous migrations are those of the Monarch butterfly from Mexico to North America, a distance of about 4,000 to 4,800 kilometres (2500-3000 miles) and have been seen throughout many cultures as a symbol of endurance and strength. "

My life has been one of endurance through hardship and now a quest for knowledge through art and the world around me. I know it's a touch peice of ink to swallow but once the face value is pulled away the true meaning is simply ambitious and full of life; just like me. I have a full time job selling and renting tuxedos to pay the bills, a part time job filming documentaries for a corporate wind energy facility, and Im going on my third year as a kinesiotherapy major with three certs in Emergeny medical training and my personal trainer certification is already paid for now i just need to take the test. I play every sport under the sun and i chase every peoce of hot tail i see. If anything this tattoo stacked my game with the females. Sure my homies all kindof gave me the "Wtf" look at first but those who know who i am and where i came from didnt bat an eye.
oh and the picture above is kindof my goal if i go with gold

I would color them like old beat up sails. Beige and rust colors. Coloring them like butterflies isn't going to help your "I'm straight" story..

Man fuck what these homophobes think, I like it. A straight up butterfly may be a little emasculating but a old school pirate ship powered by giant butterflies is whimsical and fantastical and all round psychedelically awesome.
