Even though my artist told me it's garbage but I'll get to that later. So Finally in my mid 30's and I want to get a sleeve. Why? Because I'm getting old and I want to look cool It was joke...
Ok so I decided to get a portrait as my first tat and waited about 6 months before the artist was able to squeeze me in. I finally got the portrait and it's beautiful. I'm getting compliments all the time. I'm not much for patience but I held off to get this done right once and for all. My first appointment felt awkward because he told me to stop by and look at the picture and literally a minute later said, "I'll call you when I have free time". Ok? My first tat so I don't know what to expect and didn't bother going to see anyone else because I heard this is the go to guy. I'm an artist myself so I can relate to him in a way. I like clients letting me take control if they're comfortable with my work and not nit picking every second.
I've since then taken him 3 different pieces and he's not happy with any of them. So finally on my 3rd attempt and I still have yet to hear from him about bringing in the new artwork. Should I try again or look else where?
I like the idea of having angels and clouds around the forearm surrounding the portrait. I should mention this is a portrait of my children when they were younger and I want to remember them at that age forever, or at least try every time I look at them. They're getting older and not so cute anymore.
I've been through an insane amount of tattoo images, forums, sites, you name it and really haven't found anything that's grabbed my attention. Here are some samples I've taken to him in order. I'd really like to get some advice from members on here.

Who's the artist? You could always tell him what elements you like from each of the pictures you showed and ask him to sketch something for you.

Just my opinion, but the first four look like political cartoons you would see in the newspaper. I'm not surprised your artist wasn't interested. The last one looks like it would make a great tattoo. That said, it's your tattoo on your skin, so get what you want.

Your references are garbage. You say this guy "is the man to go to" so why not let him draw you something. An angel is pretty simple. Most artists don't get too excited about a client wanting them to reproduce someone else's crap art work. Those fat little midget angels are creepy as hell.

Thanks for all the responses!
reefdiver, I'll post a pic once it's complete.
lfmn16, I'm beginning to like the last image the more I look at it. I'm sticking it with it.
JimiDanglez, you hit like a girl I agree some of those angels look a little creepy. |

The last picture is at least workable (and there are hundreds of similar styled drawings to work with in the vein), but the 1st 4 would not translate well to a tattoo.

You want a cherub. Maybe multiple. Done, right? I'd go see a cholo/vato gray-scale if thats what I was looking for. If you tell a great artist that you want a couple of extra pudgy cherubs, seems like they could knock that right out. There are a few great portrait type guys that only literally copy existing imagery, so those few instances might need a exact painting or something, but shit, they should be able to find something based on your idea that would translate well. _________________
