Hey everybody. First time poster here.
I have an old tattoo, a religious symbol that is currently totally irrelevant to me
It is all black, half an inch lines at its widest parts , about 4 inches high, 4 inches wide. Slightly three dimensional due to scarring.
My GF called around to tattooists to get me a quote for a cover-up (birthday present, god bless her), many tattooists seemed to think that covering it up with a big black square similar to one of the squares that the fetish model apneatic wears, would be a bad idea. Why would this be regarded as a bad idea? Is it difficult to cover it up properly? . See image of apneatic below |

What an elaborate response. Weak how? It is sort of how far I will stretch these days. Religion, band names, decorations, philosophy, all meaningless to me these days. Don't want to sound like a complete nihilist but it is the way it is. |

You could always wait until something does mean something to you. You don't think that down the road you'll regret having a black box on you? |

Sorry for sounding all goth now. But I am approaching 40 and I do not think things will mean enough to me in the future to have them inked on my body. A black box, possibly a huge question-mark, or maybe a dark cloud, is all that I can think of that fits my current and previous life situation. Or maybe a big red heart with "mom" written across it haha.
Anyway, are there any technical issues with inking over a slightly three dimensional chunky black tattoo with a black box as shown in the example? |

| No nothing technical to worry about. How about a grim reaper and the black cloak will cover what you have? |

Haha, yeah. I would tattoo that image but I want to keep my lecherousness slightly hidden. |

Are you a female? If you are into traditional art there are alot of meanigless images that make great tattoos and could cover most anything. Panther head, a black cat (for bad luck), Grim reaper, an umbrella.... Anything would be better than a black square. |

I have only been female in some dreams... all male here.
I think the black square fits me because it is nonfigurative. Panthers and umbrellas won't. |

I don't mean to sound like an old know-it-all, but I'm 54 and you won't believe the changes in your life over the next 15 years. Since I was 40 I've started riding motorcycles again, started drawing, began participating in animal rescue, married an artist and am currently working on a Japanese sleeve. It's your arm, if you think you want a black box, get one. |

Good with some positive input. I guess I'm just in a very dark place right now and I have been for quite a long period of time. I guess I want to reflect that somehow. Also, thx for rescuing the animals |

I've suffered from depression myself. My Shrink used to call it the wet cat syndrome. Imagine a cat that's been sitting in the rain all day and is soaking wet. Do you think the cat could ever imagine a time when it was dry? Keep plugging, for a lot of people it gets better. I'm glad I didn't make any irreversible decisions while I was depressed. Good luck! For what it's worth I recommend volunteer work. There's nothing like helping people even worse off than yourself to make you realize how good you have it. |
