I am wanting to get a tattoo, that is a repensation of my daugther who is about to turn 1 next month. Her name is Alina Pearle. So i am thinking of having a Clam with a mermaid holding a pearl.

The only thing i worry about is it being too feminine, what are some ideas to make this a more masculine tattoo? I know that in the end i will have who ever does my tattoo draw it up, but more or less just throwing different ideas around.

I am thinking black/grey
Would some sort of background be a good addition to this tattoo?
-maybe some japanese/chinese style waves around/under it.
Any other suggestions?

I am wanting it on my lower leg/calf.

In case you haven't gathered it, this is my first tattoo.

I am debating on these two artists doing it, the first is in town, the second is about 3.5 hrs away.(opinions?)

The other thing i am contemplating is waiting on the "memorial" tattoo until she is older, and get a Kraken attacking a pirate ship in the same spot.

1) Don't worry about it being too feminine
2) I think it's a great idea; it's a great pick for a good artist to work from
3) The first artist's work is way too dark for this, I'd go with the second artist of the two
4) 20 years from now you'll probably still appreciate a tribute to your daughter; Will you still think a Kracken attacking a ship is cool?

X 2 on the Kraken attacking a ship and yes, 20 years from now it will still be cool as hell.

Thanks for the replys!

I feel i would still like the tattoo of kraken/pirate ship in 20 years especially if it was done by a good artist! But I guess this is why you have 2 legs..can always get both at some point!javascript:emoticon('Very Happy') I guess we'll see how the first one goes..

Do you think there is anything i should put as background around the clam tattoo? or just leave it on its own?

Either way would work depending on the size of the piece in relation to the space you end up putting it, but waves, sea-grass and/or just a cool frame/border would work nicely.

Make the clam as big as possible for the space. Thats a lot of detail going inside the clam.

Just wanted to update this thread.

I am finially getting this tattoo saturday, This will have more meaning that before. I recently got divorced and have joint custody of my daughter, so now when I do not have her with me, she will always be with my next to my heart.

I am getting the mermaid/clam on the left side of my chest. I decided to do it in color. Only differnce is the mermaid will be sitting instead of laying down holding the pearl, then adding some waves/back ground around it.

I am also going to see if he can make her have my daughter face.

Here is the idea for the color of the shell:

I haven't seen his sketch yet, I am really excited/ anxious. He is thinking it will be about a 5 hour sitting. Hopefully I can do it in one sitting.
Any words of advise for this long of a sitting?

I am getting it done by this artist:

I will be sure to post some pictures up once i get it done!!

His work looks good. Be sure to be well hydrated, well fed and well rested.
Make sure we get pics.

Got it all done yesterday in 5.5 hours. I decided to remove the mermaid in the tattoo, his first sketch he did, didn't look right. Here is the finial product.
The last 1/2 hour was the only time it actually made me cringe a little. Overall it wasn't as bad as i thought..

I'm really happy with how it turned out!
