Ok so long story short, I fucked up a lamp in my house and now it needs new wiring. My question is with what socket im going to have to buy. I can't for the life of me remember what these kind of lamps are called or if I'm just over thinking and its just a 4 way switch.

The three smaller lights light up independently from the main light but its all on one switch at the socket.

Off
Just the 3 small lights
Just the main light
Both the 3 small lights and the main light

I've included the wiring diagram i wrote down just in case.

never seen a socket like that, i would have thought that the lamp assembly itself would have to have the smarts in it.

a four way switch would only allow you to turn the circuit on/off from 3 or more different switches..

Will just any 3 way switch do the trick? A 3 way just doesn't make sense given the fact there are 4 settings unless off isn't counted. Im not really an electrical guy but its not my first either.

your typical 3 and 4 way light switches to not work that way, they are used so that you can turn one light (or a bunch of lights wired together) on/off from different locations.

a 3 way is used on the top and bottom of stairs so that you can turn the light off and on from either the top or bootm of the stair...........or at both entrances/exits of a room, so that you can turn the room light on/off when coming and going...

a 4 way works in the same manner, except you can use those from more locations than 2, but the basic function is the same, they control one light
9or a bunch wired together)

the kind of switch you need is similar to one of those that is used in a lamp that controls one of those 3 brightness bulbs, ..... the first clik tunrs on the lowest brightness, the second click turns on the middle brightness, the third click turns on the brightest, and the 4th click turns everything off .....

basically, you have to be able to control 3 different paths for the electricity to travel.... and those circuits

your schematic on the wiring of the bulbs does not seem correct....

i have never seen something like that that controls an outlet that you can plug something into, what would stop me from plugging a toaster or vacuum cleaner into that outlet ???

not saying it doesn't exist, only that i have never seen one.....

A 3-way bulb has two filaments. Both filaments are wired at one end to the threaded part of the base. The other end of one filament is wired to the center of the base bottom, (this allows a standard bulb to be used in a 3-way lamp socket).

The other end of the other filament is wired to the ring at the bottom of the base.

Turning the switch connects power to the ring, the center, or both thereby determining which filament/s receive current with the circuit completed through the threaded part of the lamp base.
