Well... there's this kid in my class who, at the beginning of the year, did not have the mark on his arm... A couple weeks ago, I noticed this shiney marking of what looked like a fresh tattoo.

I think nothing different of him, even though he has a tattoo. But maybe it interests me because I'm a visual art freak. Razz

That's just me, though.

Some people are conditioned to think they are wrong, just like the people that are conditioned to think that homosexuality, certain religions, certain political groups, and other controversial things are wrong... I can't stand any of them... I mean, I can't stand the people who cannot accept things... Blah. Pardon my confusion.

it's especially irksome for me since my first tattoo is on my lower back and is pretty big. When I bend over to tie shoelaces or something, people start to stare and parents cover their kids' eyes....what? it's just ink people!

I am about to undergo some serious work, I am super excited!

Anyway, when I got my first tattoo, it was small and across my foot/ankle. THis was so I could "see" how painful it was exactly and decide if I really liked them as much as I thought I would. Whenever I got it I could not, of course, stop talking about it. I generally work with 1 to 3 people at night and we are all friends. Of the 15ish people I work with about 2/3rds already had tattoos. I was like what?? SO it is obviously more mainstream now considering some of these people I would have never ever thought of wearing tattoos.

None of my coworkers had anything serious however. Just small ones, so I agree about the hours of work being the difference.

I got my first tattoo 35 years ago - it was a large one on the inside of my forearm. The tattoo artist almost refused to do it because he thought I would regret it for the rest of my life. It was years before I saw another woman with a visible tattoo. Now I see them everywhere. Whenever I go in to a parlor to get more work done, there's almost always women in their 40's or over also there and interested in getting their first tattoo. So I would say that they have gone pretty mainstream. I kind of regret that, it was always kind of fun to hear that little gasp and see the discreet stares the first 10 years or so. But I don't think I have ever been discriminated against on the job or anywhere else because of that tattoo or the other ones that I have. Of course I also have 21 piercings in my ears - I think that draws more attention. But I hold a professional position that puts me in contact with lots of business people and I've never felt uncomfortable because of the piercings or tats. I've had more than a few upright and proper business women tell me they wish they had the nerve to "do something a little wild." So I think it really has to do with your attitude about yourself. If you're comfortable with yourself, others likely will be too.

I cant really decide on an answer. its in both directions. On one hand, everyone thinks im a goody two shoes and all that crap...and im NOT. lol. most ppl dont notice that i have my tats unless my sleeves are up, im usually wearing hoodies at work. but my tattoos are personal, so if someone asks ill just tell them. on the other hand, my grandma (dads mom-still living) thinks that tattoos are horrible and all that shit. my brother has i think 11 or 12 tats and wants full sleeves, she cant stand it. i got 2 now and i do want more ( omg are they addictive or what??!!) i dont really care what she thinks of the tats because its not for her, it was in dedication to my grandmother that died on oct 28th. i dont care if ppl like me or not, a tattoo doesnt make you to be someone else

the work thing doesnt matter to me either. both girls that i work with, jessica and kristin have tattoos.. jess has 3 or 4 and kristin who is 17, has 3.

personally, i have 4 small tattoos- 3 on my upper arms which nobody sees unless im either walkin around shirtless or unless im wearin sleeveless shirts and 1 on my chest which ppl see when im shirtless. needless to say, i also have both nipples pierced.

i think ppl do change the way they think of u cause of ur tattoos and piercings. ive said this before and ill say it again but if someone cant see past those tattoos and realize how i am inside and just avoid me cause i got ink, personally thats fucked up and i duno wat to say. its also fucked up cause im one of the most liberal ppl ever.

Honestly for me, I've been getting all my ink in easily coverable places because I *AM* afraid it will adversely affect my chances of getting a job, things like that. But I do agree that it's getting to the point where if people don't hire people with tattoos, they greatly limit their potential hirees. Our generation is changing things. I'll be even more curious to see the next one.
