I have designed a tattoo that is a memorial to my son who recently took his life. Part of it will be, hopefully, blue polished granite to look like his headstone. The tattoo artist I am working with doesn't feel it is possible without getting a look of a cartoon. Does anyone know of some tattoos that i can look at that have a polished stone look to them or stone that is other than gray, black or brown?

Thank you.

Sorry to hear about the loss of your son.

If it's possible to render a photo-realistic portrait in the skin to look as if you could reach out and touch the person, I believe that anything is possible if you have the right artist. Not every artist will be good at every technique or style. If you're artist can't render what you want, perhaps you don't have the right one. Sometimes it takes a bit of searching.

As for pictures and samples, I'm still looking for a sample in tattoo form... even if you took a close-up picture of his stone, a capable artist can work with that. Even if it is a different color, your artist can change the color to anything you'd like.

Usually the smaller you go with a tattoo the more cartoony things have to look to stand the test of time. Bigger is better, especially when you want detail.

The problem is going to be getting the "polished" effect to suit you. I can tattoo you with any color you want, and give something the appearance of marble, but without polishing your skin to a high lustre, it isn't gonna look like a polished stone. In order to fake the effect, you must add lighting tricks, which gives the person looking at it the IDEA that it is supposed to be a glossy finish, but that also takes away from the realism of the piece...which is probably what the person meant by "making it cartoonish".
Did any of that make sense?

I catch what you are sayiong about looking polished. I juswant to have a look of blue marble that doesn't look like the stone of a tiki god. That seems to be the only stone looking tattoos I've seen. I want it to be obvious that it is blue marble with black streaks. No cartoon look at all. I want to have it on my right bicep. Would that area allow it to be a size that is big enough?
Thank you for your replies and your condolences. To lose a child in that manner is devastating. If he had to go I would have rather it be quick like iin a car accident or something. The good part is he and I both knew how deeply we loved each other. That is what means so much to me now. He was planning to get a tattoo but never did. So this one's for you Ru!

Martin,
Thanks for your thoughts. I can'y believe the hell you and your mother have had to face. My mother had the same type situation. Her fiance was flying from Texas on military leave to visit her and the plane crashed and he died. Her first hsuband was a member of darby's Rangers and was killed in WWII. My brother died from an overdose of smack at the age of 28. Now her grandson has died at the age of 20. I know life isn't easy but sometimes it seems f'ing ridiculous.
My condolences to you for all the losses you have had to endure. The tattoos must make you feel damn good though, right? I know when I get mine designed exactly as it is in my minds eye, I'll love it and love letting the world see it.
Thanks again,
Rudy
