Instead of hijacking another thread. I was just curious as to why there are so many MIAMI INK haters?

Now, I am pretty new to the tattoo community and don't really know all the facts, so I am asking. But generally, the MIAMI INK guys seem pretty talented (with maybe Nunez and Yoji being the exceptions). I understand there are artists out there that are as good, some better than Garver and Kat, but I think they do exceptional work. I wouldn't pay them $500 an hour if I can find a guy equally good at $150 and hour, but they do good work and certain people are willing to pay their current rates.

Calling them 'sell outs' doesn't make sense to me. Disliking them for another reason might be valid. But I don't think any of them are 'sell outs' in the classic definition of the phrase. Don't 'hate' because they are able to prosper from doing something they enjoy doing.

Was Kat immature in having her motel party and boasting about it -- probably so. I assure you she regrets it and has learned from it. Haven't we all done some stupid stuff as youngsters?

As much as that show has done for the tattoo community as a whole, I would think people (artists) would be more supportive of it. Is there something I am missing or is it jealousy? Help me understand.

Something tells me you may be correct

The only thing that show has done for me was stuff like this:
http://www.everytattoo.com/tattooforum/viewtopic.php?t=3323

As for her being immature, it was last year. LOOOOOONG after she was on the show. And while I agree she is still very immature, that does not shelter her from the fact that anyone who accepts the role as spokesperson for an industry, who does not then live up to those standards, is a SELL OUT. Nothing more.
As far as I am concerned, you can take that show and everyone on it and set them on fire. I was busy doing tattoos 20 years before that show, I am still busy doing tattoos, and I'll be busy doing tattoos 20 years after they are long forgotten. It is meaningless to me, other than the lowering of standards which they do on each episode NEGATIVELY effecting the industry.
To this day I have yet to see an apology from anyone for the damage that their "immaturity" could have caused.

Honestly, I don't work for MIAMI INK in any way. I just want to understand, that's all. I like the show and I like the tattoos they do.

Look, I am a musician. And you hear about people 'selling out' all the time in the music biz. When a musician is forced to play a kind of music he doesn't want to play to make money it is selling out.

I think the guys on MIAMI INK are doing great tattoos that they love to do and are getting paid well to do it. I don't see a problem with that. I don't see it as selling out.

Yes, they should better represent the trade, so should pro athletes, but in the end we're all human beings and we should be held to no higher standard than being human.

If anything I think the show has raised the bar for tattoo artists. As now more people are going out to get tattoos and are expecting good quality like what is seen on the show. In that regard I could understand how some artists are bitter about the show, especially if they cannot deliver the goods that people are now used to seeing. If my last tattooer were as good as Yoji I'd be much happier with the tattoo I got. Crying or Very sad

Please understand here, I am not trying to create any malcontent among you folks, I just really want to understand, that's all. Consider me an agnostic with an open mind.

If they were simply getting paid to do tattoos, that would be great. But they are being paid to falsely represent the tattoo industry, also...and to show tattooing in a light that makes most professionals want to vomit. THAT IS selling out.

Yea....that's why in another post someone brought up the fact that they did not bag their machines...insinuating that is alright. Then every scratcher can say,"Well, neither do they!"
And when we see one of them hug a client with an undressed tattoo, the scratchers can all say, "Why should we worry about cross contamination?"
And when they see someone sitting on the FLOOR counting sterile needles, the scratchers can say, "Why should I even have an autoclave?"
And the scratchers can all say, "Why not do a tattoo party?" or "Why should I wear gloves...Kat doesn't!" And when they see Nunez come in late and hung over after a night of "Pigging" and work on people in that condition, the scratchers can all say, "LETS PARTY!...These people aren't doing anything different than I am doing...except they do it in a studio instead of my kitchen!"
And people will believe them because they saw the same things on MIAMI INK!

Yes, that certainly raises the bar! Blows the top off the tent!!

Not being in the business, you might THINK they have helped. But you would be wrong. They simply make a parody of the tattooing industry...and a bad one at that.
You can think whatever you like...Hell buy a new Razr phone with tattoo decals that one of those "NON SELL OUTS" is hawking, for all I care. But you see this from the same perspective as most viewers who are NOT in the business. And what is scary is that you (along with the rest of the viewing audience) missed the SUBTLE things that make the reality just solid enough to be destroyed.

Why do you keep on writing 'MIAMI INK' in capitals? This making it stand out on the page....smells fishy to me!
People hate that programme because kids watch it, think that being a tattooist is all about driving nice cars and having nice houses and having people bum you and being able to go to the best partys....they get the wrong idea and impression and buy shitty kits on ebay and go and scratch people in their kitchens without any regards for health and safety.

They also think it makes them all knowledgable about everything to do with tattoing so bowl into shops thinking that they know everything and being cocky little arses.
Miami ink makes it look like you can get a huge backpiece in one session, they dont show that it takes many sessions of many hours, so we get people coming into the shop asking for a massive cross on their back, but they want it done today... Rolling Eyes

Tattooing is a very secretive and protected community, in my opinion that is the right way as it keeps little twats out who have no understanding of tattoos and just like the supposed stigma that comes with it.

The only good thing I can say about it is that it does open peoples eyes up to the fact that they can get custom work, and since its been going there has been a lot more people and better ideas coming through. But whether this is to do with the show or just time I don't know.

Here's my opinion, they made it big, for whatever reason, as a t.v. show..I think a couple of the artists on the show are very talented..If I had the chance to get tattooed by one of them I wouldn't say no, and I don't think too many people would. Who wouldn't want a portrait done by Kat, or a Japanese design done by Chris? Why are people hating them?..a talented artist does a good tattoo..good people, good show, good tattoos, funny yoji, what's not to like? Shocked

Basically, these guys are getting "mad respect" and being referred to be "outsiders" as "the best in the industry", while guys like Lyle Tuttle, Jack Rudy, Ed hardy, Bert Grimm, Guy Atchison, Brian Everett, Filip Leu, Eric Maaske (rip), Gilm Monte, Shotsie Gorman, and a slew of other talented folks that have given blood, sweat and tears BACK to the tattoo community are, for the most part, IGNORED.

I wouldn't want one!

Who knows what nasty bugs she has? She tattooed Bam Marjera in a motel room, with no gloves... who would ever want a tattoo from someone who did that and even POSTED IT ON HER OWN WEBSITE? As if it were okay! And defended herself for it! That's horrific. She doesn't respect HERSELF enough to take the proper precautions - what makes you think she'd give a shit about YOU? I don't care how good she is at portraits, or how nice her black and grey stuff is. There are plenty of other amazing portrait artists. (Not to mention the hands on Kat's pinup girls always look very awkward, imo.)

Very true.

The only thing the Miami Ink people are giving to the community are loads of unfit scratchers who want to make a quick buck without putting in any effort.
