You would expect to pay for college if you wanted to fix air conditioners, right? Well, a decent tattoo artist can make a lot more money that an air conditioner repairman. I would be careful that the person is qualified to apprentice you. If so, and you want to make the investment, there is no problem.

Most people don't charge you, but require you work in the studio doing all the cleaning, needle making, scrubbing tubes and soforth. This causes you to pick up good habits...if you can't keep a toilet clean, how could you be expected to keep a studio safe and clean? If it were me, I would do it that way, and have you sign a non-disclosure/non-competition form, as well as a contract that had you working for me for a period of time after the apprenticeship (at my discretion). That way, I would not be training you to open a studio next to me and write a book about all the info I gave you.

I feel if they charge you for the apprenticeship, it's a done deal, and you owe them nothing when the apprenticeship is complete...other than normal respect.

that was very well said !! congrats !

This was sent to me in a PM, I thought I'd post it here (edited a little so it's easier to read) for y'all.

LOL! I meant to start a new topic, guess I clicked on the wrong button.

I agree whole heartedly on the clean & separate room thing, etc.
That is how I envision my own home/workspace in the near future. My ideal scenario is the mobile shop/r.v. thing because traveling is how I prefer to spend my life. But until things take a fortuitous turn in my direction I'm stuck doin' what I do the way I do it.
Wish it were different but life is full of ungranted wishes. I got to earn my bacon in the mean time, and there isn't much else I can do in the world anytime soon.

I should have restructured my post in a different way because what I was really after more than anything is feedback on the tattoo school in Denver.
I may be in a situation before long where I can get some schooling paid for by the state through disability & I'm wondering:

A: if this school is reputable enough that others have heard of it,
B: how parlor owners view completion certificates from there or some such place.

The Red Cross gives free classes on the whole cleanliness thing & one can get a completion certificate from them on that also.
Its not, in the end, the knowledge of cleanliness/sterile so much as its the habits one gets into & I see plainly how parlors have the view that most of them do.
Working & functioning in 'clean-mode' has to be an instinctive habit.
Anyone who has been in the military knows how to clean & keep things clean, that's a given.
Clean & sterile ARE the most important factors but it isn't something that takes a long time to 'master', & if it does than that person probably isn't smart enough to do more than tend stock somewhere.

For me, at least, the world of Tattoo is my life (like a marriage) for better or worse. No one but I know the depth of my devotion & dedication to this Art medium although there are those with the capacity to see it for what it is, if they would only take the time to look & see.
I am also pretty sure there are many more people wanting to apprentice than there are shops & Artists willing to take them on. I can see it from the shop angle & all the doubts & questions bringing an apprentice on board creates. It can be hard to see the wanna-bees from those with the 'tattoo addiction'.

Anyway, that's basically where I'm at in it all. I can't afford to wait on someone to teach me /verify what I already know to earn a living.
We should ALL make more efforts to see these industry-wide issues in the fullest perspectives from all the different views.

I would be happy to work a while in a parlor doing the 'flunkie'/gopher work to prove myself but in the end it won't make that much difference overall because it is still based on trust & word-of-mouth.

We should have some (more?) standardized processes that are Red Cross (or something like) approved & recognized nationwide.
I'm sure there are many schools of thought on that too.
Do we want/need more regulation in this industry or, as most of our rebel free spirits prefer, much less with the gov't not any part of it? We can't have it both ways.
I would like to see a system in place that the majority in this field could agree to & adhere to but it just isn't possible without a LOT of bureaucratic involvement.

Maybe a National Tattoo Council made up of the top 100 (2 from each state?) most experienced Artists in the industry for oversite would work, who really knows?
Most of us agree that there should be something, just agreeing on what & how that is will just keep the arguments & debates going & never solve anything.
If a parlor/Artist is objectionable to local (or otherwise) standardization than all they need do is go underground so then enforcement becomes another issue all together. It is an endless, near vicious circle.
In the mean time nice work CAN be scratched out & done so just as clean as in a parlor, its all about the trust.

Well I see my pm got posted, cool. But I'm still waiting for some feedback on that school in Denver. Either that or maybe I'm just not finding the posted replies about it. I'm not trying to keep an old debate alive, I am trying to find out if anyone has heard of that place, if its worth a hang or just some more crap to wade through. I'll see if I can find that link again & post that, maybe others can check it out & see what they think. The whole concept seems so far out ya know, a tattoo Art school, seemed almost too strange to be real. But Colo is a pretty liberal minded state so who knows.

BluOwle you are a typist and good with words, and I am guessing educated, this makes you seem better than 95% of the people who do home tattos that have posted on here before. Not all shops are clean, I have been in one while the guy was giving me a tour the "clean" room reaked of pot, and the hangout people started spraying airfreshners when they saw me coming. Now, regardless bad shops can be catagorized with the hep spreading scratchers, so hating on a guy that works from home does not mean that a "shop" is any better. But an educated person probably would not go to a house or dirty shop, so I am not shure where that leaves you. You can only be so clean in the place where you live, sorry but stuff gets everyware regardless of how spic and span you are.

As to a tattoo college, rarley is education viewed as a bad thing, and I doubt people will look down on you for learning. But as somone in college I view myself as buying a degree while learning very little, others miliage may vary. So are you wanting to go to school to learn or just say you did it?

And if you could please post some pictures of work/drawings, and add a little about your history. Military embeds disiplin, so I am shure you will be sucessfull in this industry with proper time and effort.
