First of all, what a wonderful message board this is. I really hope to get the advice of some of the resident tattoo artists here. I really want to be as much in the "know" because hauling 3 boys around to a plethora of tattoo shops probably won't happen and I will only get to a few. I want to be armed with the correct questions, further than what "about.com" suggests, lol.

Here is a snippet of what I've asked on a "mothering" type of message board. Most obviously the wrong place to ask the more serious of questions.

Quote:
I was thinking of getting my children's birthstone in bezels on a necklace as an ankle tattoo. The closest example I can find on google is this but I wouldn't put it in a fish bezel... I was thinking something more fancy and in some ink close to white gold. I'm not sure how well they can ink a metal color in the skin though.

Or... I think this style would look very nice... having a diamond between the birthstones would look very good. I couldn't possibly have enough stones (3 boys) to put all the way around my ankle though... and I don't want something that large.

My other thought on a tattoo... and certainly easier, would be to have my boy's zodiac (or some other month symbol, what would that be?) signs. Instead of what I think are boring, old, black symbols or black tattoos... I would have them done in my children's birthstone colors (outlined in black). But I feel that lacks originality. It's like joining the masses of those with Asian symbols on their necks.

The thing is that I'm guessing I would have to find someone really talented in the drawing department or a tattoo artist really good at drawing, if I went with my first tattoo idea. I imagine I would have to pay the tattoo guy extra cash? I would also assume that drawing and coloring things such as birthstones would be difficult and I wouldn't want somebody to do a lousy job at that.

So further thoughts on this quoted post from a message board far, far away is...

Exactly how unoriginal is having my 3 son's zodiac symbols tattooed?

Are tatooing gems difficult? Is this something I'm going to have to be extra sure my artist can and has done successfuly in the past?

What about white or silver ink for tattooed jewelry. Does it look realistic, terrible, what?

How much, or how long does it take someone through a shop to draw me a tattoo?

How can I "impress" you tattoo artists? I want something rare and beautiful. What do you think would "wow" you in regards to some sort of tattoo that represents my 3 boys?

Furthermore... have you ever given a "child" tattoo that was pretty neat? Wanna tell me what it was wink ?

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me. Unlike my other two tattoos, I really want this one to have a lot of thought put into it.

To clarify some things after re-reading my post...

"Child Tattoos"- You probably already know what I meant by this. I mean as in tattoos that have to do with one's children.

"Impressing a Tattoo Artist"- As in, I suppose, proper things that would make an impressive gem, or originality wise. Yes, I value your opinion and I won't over-ride my own thoughts on what I want because of a need to impress, lol.

I've been doing further reading on the site and saw that tattoo artists have profiles... um, what are they called... um, OH, portfolios. I will make sure I peruse them. However, if there is any other advice one could give me on choosing the correct artist based of the type of tattoo I might get if it were to be a gem with white or yellow gold.

I've also have read this thread on cleanliness, etc. So if you rather not repeat anything you have previously said here, lol wink

I'm truly learning tons the further I read. Thanks for being, at least to the naked eye, much informed on the topic!

Exactly how unoriginal is having my 3 son's zodiac symbols tattooed?

Not particularly unique. But who cares? They can still be customized in many ways and a powerful symbol can be designed.

Are tatooing gems difficult? Is this something I'm going to have to be extra sure my artist can and has done successfuly in the past?

You should ALWAYS make sure the artist is capable, and is confident he/she can do what you want. Depending on the size, gems can be done fairly realistically.

What about white or silver ink for tattooed jewelry. Does it look realistic, terrible, what?

There are no metallic tattoo inks. If the piece is large enough, the illusion of gold or chrome is possible, though. This is not an effect that just any idiot can pull off, so ask to see some artwork the artist may have which illustrates his technique for doing metallic effects.

How much, or how long does it take someone through a shop to draw me a tattoo?

Depends on their workload, and the tattoo you want. In my studio we take multiple people from "idea" stage to the finished product on a daily basis. Larger work may take a while to come up with, as it must be worked into your schedule, which may already be busy.

How can I "impress" you tattoo artists? I want something rare and beautiful. What do you think would "wow" you in regards to some sort of tattoo that represents my 3 boys?

Just being open to artistic ideas once you find a reputable artist. Most of us aren't opposed to doing most anything...we are only bored with doing it the same old way every time. When I get a customer who is into getting something different and unique, I am happier.

Furthermore... have you ever given a "child" tattoo that was pretty neat? Wanna tell me what it was ?

Lots of them.

My thoughts:

Scrap the anklet of gems idea.
Do each of the three kids zodiac symbols in bold 3-D looking graphic, about 2 inches tall, and in a gold effect, with a gem set in some part of them. Tie them all together with something else...I can think of a million ideas...so that they go all the way around the ankle. Put the oldest on the front (shin) and the others on the sides, then do the fill in between them.

One thought about the fill in:
Each zodiac has an elemental association (fire, water, earth, air) and you could use those ideas to connect the main symbols.
The more this is thought out in an esoteric manner, the more actual meaning it will have, and the more personally powerful it will be. As for impressing the artist, someone who puts thought into accurately displaying their symbolism just gets me all warm and fuzzy inside.

And a tip:
Most tattoo studios don't allow children, so when you go looking, get a sitter. Most of us find it hard to concentrate on a tattoo while someone's kids are turning the furnature upside down and tearing designs off the walls while the parents pretend to not notice. Even if your li'l darlin's aren't like that, most people's kids ARE, so we have a rule. No kids in the studio.

I just wanted to say that this is actually an impressive topic for once. Most of the posts I read are the same old crap over and over. Finally, a clear question that was thought out and a hell of an answer.

Badwolf, love the ideas.

Jenna, hope you have success with your tattoo and hope you can post a pic of it when you're done.

Thanks Badwolf for all the ideas and help! Dork, thanks for the post compliment and luck!

Okay... reading through my response...

I'm glad gems can be done realisitcally. I little bummed out about the metal since I don't think the tattoo I get will be large enough, but I'll see what can be done before I totally scrap that idea, like you said.

That's a good idea for the tattoo Badwolf... I'm not keen on the size though. Though, that's a wonderful idea about putting a fill in between the symbols. Now I have to spend all day on the computer, again, looking and zodiac signs/symbols or whatever else, lol. I enjoy it though!

... freaking looking up "esoteric". Ah, I gotcha! Make me break out the dictionary and everything, geesh wink Yes, an esoteric tattoo is a good idea!

And point taken about the children. All they do is fight fight fight, scream, knock into things... just true horrors!

Thanks again for the help/tips/ideas. I'll certainly take more though if someone has something to offer.

Off to Google land!

Hm... month flowers. Gladiolus, rose or honeysuckle and violet or primrose. Perhaps their names done in fancy cursive near the flower. The flowers put in a bunch and leave it like that?

Sorry if my thought process gets to be a little too much. Still open to suggestions or ideas to build upon what I already have. I don't have many people in real life to help me out Smile
