I will have enough money saved in 6 months to open my own shop. I currently work in two different shops (both have the same owner). I have alot of business experience, a good working knowledge of all aspects in a tattoo/piercing shop, but is it enough?. I plan on offering a great shop rate so artists can make a butt truck load of money, many other plusses, but when I open my shop I will only have had two years experience as a tattoo artist. With that in mind, would artists be willing to work in a shop in which the owner had the *least* experience??

I think an artist would be worried more about how well you run your business than how well you tattoo. There are people who own tattoo shops who don't even tattoo.

you've mentioned your experience in the actual ART of tattooing. That being said :

-Have you taken courses on how to run a small business?

- Do you deal directly with potential customers when it comes to meeting them/making appointments/quoting prices or do you currently work with a "front counter person"?

- How are you with basic household finances?

- How are you with budgeting money?

- Do you deal directly with supply companies or does the woner of the shop you work in handle that? Do you have specific supply companies lined up, or are you still "shopping around"?

- Have you read up on all of the local ordinances/state laws concerning both tattooing AND running a private business? What licenses are needed? What type of building/storefront will be needed for your shop?

- Do you have an accountant? If not, you may want to start shopping around for one of those as well. This will help you with both federal and local taxes and what-not.

I don't want to discourage you in any way, but, to me, a person with 2 years of tattooing experience more than likely hasn't been in the business long enough to handle running his/her own shop. If you're unhappy in the shop(s) you currently work in, then maybe finding a shop that is more suited for you to work in is in order. There's an over-abundance of tattoo shops at this point as it is, does the world REALLY need one more right now? Just a question to think about.

CxCx- Thank you so much, that gives me alot to think about. I have owned businesses in the past, a few that did very well, so I know that end of it. What I really wonder is will other (more experienced) artists work under those conditions?

I do believe (in the particular area I'm looking to open a shop in at least) the art world world WOULD benefit from the opening of a good clean shop. Where the owners don't say "an autowhat?" or "nah- i aint got no portfolio but look here at ma old lady's leg." Wink

that is sooo true, i know some real successful shops where the owner does not tattoo at all, just runs the buisness itself.

you seem like you have a pretty good idea of what tattoo artist mainly looks for in a shop, i think it just might be a rough start getting artist to leave there shops to get into a brand new one that has no history
