this may be a weird question to ask but ... how do i find a GOOD artist?
I got my first tattoo over a year ago, maybe 2, but the guy who did it didn't do a great job. It was my design - super simple - but he just didn't know what he was doing i guess. Sometimes I hate people looking at it because i get so many comments about it needing to be touched up and until recently couldnt afford to. i went back to the same shop with my cousin a while back and heard that the guy was fired not too long after i got it. GREAT! ...
how can I avoid this in the future? i know that shops have portfolios but usually when i go the artists are too busy to let me know whos it whos if its even seperated. i've tried looking online but i haven't found that many shops in my area that have a website or online portfolio. (santa monica/west la/hollywood/culver city/venice) is there somewhere else i can check? or somewhere/someone anyone could recommend?
i have so many things i want to get done but am afraid to go anywhere and end up with the same experience!!! _________________ enjoy. |

This has been talked about before...even in your area.
You have to spend some money on gas and hit some shops (Several). In your area there are plenty. EVERY artist is going to have there own portfolio (trust me). Word of mouth works to find shops and sometimes artists but you have to find the one that does the work YOU like. Finding a tattoo artist is more important to a tattooee then it is for a model to find a good make-up artist or hair-stylist.
Don't EVER shop for artists based on MONEY either... Cheap is NOT good. _________________

The money wasn't the issue. I know better than that ... I want quality. And this shop was recommended (not the artist though, guess he was the new guy).
I don't know ... I guess I just have to go about it a different way. Thanks though. _________________ enjoy. |

Tattoo magazines help too sometimes. It at least give you some shop names in your area (depending on the mag.)
Next time request a portolio before getting any INK. EVERY artist has one, if they don't there not worth you getting any work done from. _________________

Touching on what was already mentioned:
Everybody has a different style and there's a style to suit every taste. Recommendations are good but you still have to look over the artists work because even though someone else may like a certain artist's work, you may not.
Beware the "shop" portfolio. Each artist should have their own individual portfolio. If it's a book with several artists work in it, you may never know who did what... or even if the particular artist still works at that shop.
I've also heard a lot of people say 'but my design was so simple, how could someone screw it up?'. That's easy... no eraser. _________________ ~Stacey Sharp
