I thought this would be interesting.

So I'll start.

I got my first tattoo at the ripe old age of 21.

I drove with my best friend over 50 miles to a tattoo shop in a college town. I had my printout in hand, and I was nervous as hell. Being as I grew up in a small town that had no local artists, I'd never really been exposed to professional tattooing. I had only seen kids do it at a party.

So, here I go, with my little paper and I was so close to peeing my pants, since I've ALWAYS been afraid of needles. I remember thinking about people who told me it felt like a lot of bee stings all at once. I walk in and the walls are coated with flash. A guy walks out of the back and asks me for my ID. I show it to him, and he asks me what I want. I handed him my printout, and asked him his price, and some other questions about sterilization. He says $70 flat, and tells me how he sets up. My friend prodded me and I gave him my cash, and signed some papers.

He pointed to a door, and told me to go to the first chair in there. My friend started to follow me, and he stopped her, and said he doesn't tattoo with other people in the room, as was his policy. By now, my eyes are saucer shaped, and I'm shaking.

Scary tattoo man and I go into the back room, and I sit down in the chair. He explains what he's doing as he sets up, and tells me to relax. He was very nice, although a bit abrasive. He asked if I've ever seen anyone tattoo before, and I shake my head...

Then he said "so I'm popping your ink cherry, huh?"

He grabbed my foot, and tore off my shoe. It landed somewhere across my room. My sock ended up over the TV, blocking part of the Korn music video that was running. He stretched out my leg, turned it, and prepped me.

Then he turned on the machine.

I can bet I was shaking more than that machine was.

So he started on my calf, outlining the 3 Chinese characters I had brought in. It was such an odd sensation, the mixture of pain...with something else.
He talked as he worked and we talked about scars and pain, as well as his history in tattooing. I sat still, except for an involuntary leg twitch every now and then.

Before I knew it, he was done.

He cleaned me up, bandaged me, and put my sock and shoe back on. He tied my laces so tight, I thought for sure my foot was gonna fall off. He briefed me on aftercare, and gave me a tattoo goo sample, and a tattoo care handout.

I tipped him, and I was released to my concerned friend, who helped me find my way outside. It took me about a half hour to get what I like to call "tattoo stupor."

So now, I'm an apprentice, and my mentor just put the line work of a piece I created on my back. I can't wait to get it colored!

Who else?

Well, I got my first at the tender age of 39. Very Happy

I wanted to get one for a number of years, and then I thought I knew what I wanted to get, but I couldn't find the right design. Then, as I got older, what I wanted to get wasn't right, it just would've reminded me of not-so-happy times, so I let the idea go for awhile. Finally, last year, I thought about it some more, found a new idea, looked for a few months for a design I liked, and finally found it. Checked out one or two of the local shops, and made my appointment. I was very happy with the way it turned out (although I still need to go back for a touch up).

Now once again, still at the tender age of 39, I'm getting my second tattoo in 9 days, and also finding out about working my first tat into a 1/2 sleeve.

Eh whatever, if you had found the other thread he probably would've picked on you for resurrecting an old thread. Wink

I'm probably going to get flamed but I got my first tattoo at 16, because I lied, looked older than I was at that age, and had a kick ass fake ID. I got my spies done at a reputable shop but I lied my butt off.

Basically had a huge list of shops and drove around in my mom's station wagon checking out portfolios with my best friend. The third shop I checked out I liked the guy's portfolio and we ended up chatting for 2 hours so I made an appointment for the next day.

Brought in the spies I wanted, he explained about the white ink and all that in the white spy. Damn that shit felt crazy. My first was my tramp stamp so every time he went near my spine area or kinda near my ass (I've always had a big ass) it went from kinda hurting to just feeling really really weird. So he started talking to me about nerve endings and shit and we were joking about really lame tattoos and his top money making flash on the walls.

Halfway through the tatt we started hearing all this crazy noise outside so we took a smoke break and realized that the women's clinic across the street was being picketed by pro-lifers holding up signs of dead fetus' and shit, it was kinda crazy.

Finally we finished up and I got bandaged up and all that then as we're leaving the shop about 10 heavily tatted up gang bangers walk in, we bought an eight ball off of them (while not in the shop) then my best friend drove me, in my mom's station wagon, back to his house where we got fucked up. Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh highschool...

Nah, I wouldn't have posted if I seen an old thread on it. I used to moderate a huge forum and EVERYONE bitched about old threads revived.

They used to do that shit in Pittsburgh up by the diners and stuff, and where little kids could see. We threw shit at them just for the fact that they had that gory stuff where the little ones could see.

i wanted a tattoo for years and my mother always told me "as long as you're under my roof, you're under my rules, bla bla bla..." didn't matter if i was 20 and at her place she would have freaked..
and oddly enough, even though i moved out at 15, i still didn't do it, simply because she pounded it into my head that i could do whatever i wanted when i was an adult.. even though i did everything else i wanted when i wanted, i still waited, because i respected her that much..
but then i turned 18 and the thought was getting more persistant.. at this time i was back at moms because she needed me there after my dad left and after one particularly heart wrenching evening, she came into my room and she said.. we've been through a lot, haven't we.. we deserve something nice, let's go get tattoo'd!

i nearly shat myself.. was she drunk? lol no she was serious, so we went out of town since our town had no artists and we went to a few places before we found an artist we clicked with who did good work and we went in a couple weeks later and we both got little kangi pieces.. yeah, i know kangi, lame, but.. i love it not because it was my first but because of the period in my life and of course, it was the only real bonding time i'd had with my mom at that point.. i'll never cover it up because it'll always remind me that my mom's fucking superwoman and she's the best mom i could ever ask for

now 8 tattoos later, i'm working the piece into my first sleeve =)
