This is a question that has been asked many times before and as the site grows it ought to be a question that is addressed. The obvious gains would be a resource for tattoo professionals where the tattoo community as a whole could congregrate and discuss their profession.

However before we could commence to creating such a section (obvious the section would be password protected) we are just looking for some ideas on how to keep the scratchers/wannabees out and protect an enviroment that remains professional.

The obvious first step would be to verify that the artist works at an accredited shop (would be verified via calling the number and talking to the artist at which point the password to the forum would be given)

Any other suggestions/comments are always appreciated.

Thanks

Matt

I think this could be a good idea but there should be some background checks on these "professionals." They should have to supply the name of the shop in which they apprenticed with a phone number to contact the mentor artist. They should also have to give you the name and number of the shop they currently work in. You'll have to find a way to check these people out. Self taught scratchers in their basements should not have access to a forum for professionals. Apprentices like myself should also not be allowed. Any technical questions I have are happily awnsered by the artists who are teaching me. Again a good idea but it's going to take a lot of work. Wink

4-0 so far in favor but still new concept for the site.

personaly the few friends i have made dubya dubya style i have often just noticed post they make and decide for my self if what knowledge or help i may have would be of any use to the person then go from there.
and vise versa im no super genius know it all ,i still have much to learn,so when i see people posting good info i conversate and befor you know it WALAHHHH I HAVE A NEW TAT FRIEND HAHHAAAAAAhaaaaaaaaaaaa.
i do know of artist only post boards where tech info is shared but i'm not to clear how the site decides who get's the password.

definetly check their status as an artist/tattooer........
profiles will have to be COMPLETELY filled out, including phone #s, email addys and shop name.........and also, an online portfolio is a must.
the biggest prob i have seen on most private forums is the password tends to somehow get tossed around outside of the forum for whatever reasons......and people that have not been approved slip in........
thats when ya need a few good moderators with a good eye and the power to ban......and a scheduled password change evry so often isnt a bad idea either.......and i have even seen a purge at some point in a few other private forums, to get rid of the undesirables.

All 'potential' pros should most defintely be checked out. Online portfolios would be helpful and contacting the shop for verification would be a definite. I agree with completed profiles. I like to know who I'm talking to.

I've seen, all too often, a password given to undeserving individuals. Frequent password changes would be helpful.

I could definitely see this as an asset to our little group here.

I think a technical forum would be great. I cant say I would recommend much else then what has been stated by everyone else that has posted a reply. But one argument I would like to say would be about listing the shop and mentor. I have no problem giving this information and by all means my mentor still to this day has my respect as far as artists go alas he did teach me. But the problem arises in that we no longer speak....in all actuality he hates me. Apparently leaving the shop was an ultimate betrayal to him. Unfortunately I couldnt take the constant drinking and general nonsense that was carried on by him and fellow drinkin buddies. He was destroying his business and expected me to carry it on. Just couldnt take it anymore and left. I spent a few months deciding if I even was going to keep tattooing because of the mafia type attitude given to me upon informing him of my decision. So that was a litlle long winded but I knew someone would ask why.

I really like the idea of a tech. section. And i agree that the professional artist should be checked out. How to do this is a good ?. If you call the current place of business, this is a good way to check up on them. But as far as contacting the "mentor", I don't agree. Anyone who has been in the business long enough knows that feelings can get hurt, and ego's bruised, when an artist leaves some studios. I speak of this on a personal account. My 'mentor' was more into the aspect of how I could make him more money, even when I didn't think that I was ready for some pieces. But after I left that studio, I found that not all owners/mentors were the same. So that would mean I don't make the grade because of my "mentor"? Instead of if I'm doing good, clean, sterial work? Paid my dues? And have a large client base? Plus my undying love for the art?

Honestly, I can't see contacting the mentor either...
Not everyone has a mentor... some have many.

Another thought may be to have seperate passwords for each professional artist, so if anyone is giving out their password to anyone who isn't them, atleast you could track down the "leak" and plug it at its source.

it's been a while since i've logged in so thats why its taken me so long to follow up. when i say give the name and contact info of a mentor, i don't mean call them up for reference sake. I think the person applying to a forum for professionals should be able to give a name of a artist or shop that contributed the most to thier apprenticeship. as in a job application they can list if this reference can or cannot be contacted. if they say no and can leave a valid reason why then that should be fine also. but i'm sure there are some idiot in a shop somewhere who's photoshopped portfolio doesnt suck. asking for a reference is the easiest way to weed out the people who are proud to have taught themselves.

There are some self taught artists who are very legit and have had enough brains to find and utilize the right info to become highly professional over time. They are few, and far in between, but they do exist. Even they would agree (having struggled through it themselves) that an apprenticeship is the best way of doing things, and that very few who don't apprentice will be safe and well informed...but those who have walked that path and ended up pulling it off, should be respected just the same. I am simply not interested in training someone over the internet, and a password protected forum should be set up so professionals (regardless of how they were trained) can stay informed by each other of important developements and new technical info. Those working in a studio, who can show they are clean and talented should be allowed to participate.

I was not given the oppritunity to apprentice, I just walked into a shop where a friend worked, was given equipment, and began tattooing.I've not been employed doing anything but tattooing since, aside from a little painting now and then. My apprenticeship is still going on every tattoo I do I learn more and more. I'm sure others would agree when I say, you can never learn enough, and I would gladly add what I can when I can, to my arsenal of knowledge. Give and recieve.

I see that lots have looked here about the professional forum, but I still don't see anything more about it. Is it something we can look forward to, or are we all just hoping for no reason?
