|

Okay, I have a question to ask, and I know I'm not the first.
I am currently working on my art portfolio and trying to bring it to the level that I feel will land me an apprentice position with the artist that I would like as my mentor.
My question is, as a tattooist, if you were looking/considering an apprentice, granted that the artist in question impressed you, would you find it more benaficial if the artist had already had minor experience with a machine, or is this un-necassary? I don't mean doing any work on people. All I mean is, would I be helping my self and my future mentor at all if I were to be practising on grapefruits and fake skins, documenting my progress as I go along, thus becoming familiar with a machine and simple techniques.
In no way would I ever consider working on someone before my time was right. I have more respect and admiration for this industry and the people who have built it and that's why I want to go about this the best and right way. Your opinions on this matter are greatly appreciated. Thanks.

| If it were me, I'd rather you never touched any tattoo equipment. |

you are getting the cart way ahead of the horse......if you start tattooing objects now.....what do expect to gain in knowledge? and the knowledge you may gain will ultimately be wrong, therefore making your mentors job even more difficult.....now he has to reverse what you have taught yourself, and what you think is right........
and i can tell you......any good mentor would not condone such activity from their student.......and most will not even consider you , if you have ever tattooed before......they dont want the hassle of trying to reverse the wrongs that have been done.
relax.....and when the time is right.....you will be taught the correct way (hopefully) |

hey, thanks for the replys guys.... yeah, this is sort of what I figured.
Although I did have some thoughts that if a tattooist was going to apprentice someone, they may find it benefiacial to know if the artist can use a machine the way he/she can use a pencil or what ever medium.
I only say this because the first time that I use a machine, weather I am with a mentor or on my own (which wont be the case), I will inevitably lay down the same line. Never the less, I do see the bigger picture and will take this process as it comes....
Good thing I'm a great spectator.... and man, can I take out a mean bag of garbage!
Cheers guys. |

NO, it is much better for you and even more so for you mentor for you NOT to touch a tattoo machine. Practice means nothing, if you’re practicing the wrong way. It's easier for your mentor to teach you from a clean slate rather then having to re-teach or make you relearn bad habits. _________________

Build a portfolio full of your best drawings, paintings, and sketches. After that, find an artist or three you can look up to and respect.
Ask him/her to look at your portfolio. If they like it ask for the job. (Well, it's not really a job, you don't get paid in cash, you get paid by learning a trait instead.
Do this until someone picks you up... _________________

I think one of the reasons my Sensei agreed to be my mentor was because I'd never touched a tattoo machine before.
I have a feeling if I'd said, "hey I bought this cool POS machine on eBay and..." I probably wouldn't have got to finish the sentence because he would have kicked me out of his shop.
matter of fact, it was more because all my questions to him were related more towards art then tattooing that he thought my, 'head was in the right place.'
just a thought from a looowly apprentice.

It is definitely a much better idea that you NEVER touch a machine first!!! Nothing good can come from that!

actually it was 'TheDad' who drug the thread out of archives.
But it least it shows that people are searching before they ask questions, which is always cool. _________________ www.secondskinstudio.net
