Hey all,
Okay, I've perused the aftercare topics and searched all the 'wet' posts and never found an answer.
Everyone agrees that you shouldn't get a tattoo wet until after it heals, but what is the determiner for 'after it heals'? When is a tattoo healed?
I got mine (about a 5" manta and diver) about 5 days ago and it's about 99% done flaking off. When it's done flaking, is it healed? Can I hop back in the water?

yeah i would say that when you don't have anymore scabs/flakes you re good to go.
some tattoos take longer than other to heal, although i believe that full healing time is usually around 5-6 weeks.
some colors sometimes start to show after that.

| I usually hear two weeks. One place said to wait a full three months, but the general consensus seems to be that after the first two weeks you're fine. |

If the 'crusties' are off, then you'll be fine. Typically 3-5 weeks is the norm for a tattoo to look "fully healed"

You've stated my problem perfectly.  I've heard two weeks, I've heard three weeks, I've heard lots of 'afters' but I've never come across anyone that says what equals healed.
What is going on after the flakyness is done that needs more time...or is it all healed up after it's done flaking off?
If it's not done...is it all sub-surface stuff or will going diving (where I'm in the water, with 60lbs of stuff on my back, for an hour) do something bad to it?
It's the engineer in me. Either it's healed or it's not...and there should be something that happens that says "Yea verily, you're healed!" or at least Healed enough so that you can go about your normal life.

Mine (both times) flaked twice. The second round isn't as bad as the first, so I don't know if that's normal. Maybe you have a second flaking in sight? |

Not trying to bust balls, but HOW can anyone old enough to get a tattoo NOT know themselves well enough to JUST KNOW when a relatively minor wound is healed on their own body?
I mean...it isn't a triple bypass surgery or something you can't really SEE.
It's a relatively MILD and extremely superficial "brushburn" type wound.

Just know? You're kidding right? It's not like there is an obvious cut that has healed, or a bone that has set. Those I know..hell, those everyone knows. However, I assumed (incorrectly) that with the amazing number of people asking questions about when you can and can't do something, you'd have realized that this is a common problem. In addition, with the huge spread in answers, everything from 5 days to 3 weeks, I would have also assumed (again incorrectly) that you would have known that even the 'experts' seem to differ on their answers.
However, thank you very much for your amazing insite that I should just know. I guess we can pack up this forums as you have informed us that we should just know the answers.

The experts differ on their answers because EVERYONE HEALS DIFFERENTLY and AT THEIR OWN RATE and no expert can predict when that will be for you. My best guess after over 20 years is: Somewhere between three days and three months. And I would be willing to bet that with a bit of common sense, you'd know where YOU fit in to that equasion.
I wasn't insulting you...I was giving you more credit than you were giving yourself, but perhaps that's usually a mistake.

No offense taken.
I assumed, correctly apparently, that when the peeling and flaking was done that the tattoo was healed. Not having a whole lot of experience with them, I hopped on here for confirmation (that I got). So apparently my common sense was right on track and the people here were nice enough to put that to rest for me. (Did you even read the thread?)
The part that I'm a bit fuzzy on is why you decided it was a good idea to hop in and lay about me for asking a question...that is the whole purpose of these forums. |

Oh, you poor, poor victim!
I didn't realize that youd rather have a bunch of people tell you a million different things. I thought maybe you'd want an explaination.

If it's his first tattoo, then he might not be able to tell when it is healed. Sure, his flaking is 99% done, but maybe that means that he needs to wait until it's 100%, or maybe he's supposed to wait 2 weeks after that because there's some super-secret spy-level healing going on under the skin.
XD Anyway, I think it's pretty safe to say that's not the case, but he's jsut trying to be on the safe and and not fuck up his fist tattoo. I'd probably do the same thing. |
