Ok so recently I got wind of an artist in my area who might be looking for someone to take on. Here's my question if the artists work is only average would you go for the job, I'm torn. It's sooo hard to get into the industry and get a placement but I want to work for someone who is really good at what they do then again I don't think I'm gonna get many chances into this business, if this is indeed an opening for me.
I spose what I'm really trying to ask is how many people have surpassed their 'masters' (for want of a better word). How much is tech skill and how much is artistic skill.
Really thinking alot about this. Any thoughts would be very appreciated. |

The goal is ALWAYS to surpass your masters.
If you have nothing new to bring to the picnic, then stay out of it. There are already a bazillion average artists out there. At one point, there was room for another handful of average artists...today, there is an over abundance.
When dealing with any artform, you must ask yourself a question:
What do ~I~ have to give to THE ARTFORM?
If the answer is
A. nothing
or
B. Yet another bowl of potato salad
Then there isn't really any need for you to get involved.
There's tons of potato salad at this picnic, already. _________________ If you GIVE a man fire, you keep him warm for the day...but if you SET a man on fire, you keep him warm for the rest of his life.

If it gets you into the industry then do it. Take what he tells you with a grain of salt, a suggestion. Do as he says while under his tutelage, but formulate your own ideas and figure out how to use what you learn for your own purposes.
You can learn from anyone, even if what you learn is 'what not to do'. |
