I'm a swim instructor & a lifeguard and I absolutely MUST get in the water tomorrow for an hour to teach swim lessons. It's at an indoor pool, so sun isn't an issue. I got my tattoo 8 days ago and haven't yet gone in the water. IT IS NOT AN OPTION FOR ME TO STAY OUT OF THE WATER.

The only answers I've gotten are "Stay out of the water" or "It'll be fine." The second answer seems wrong to me, because well, I feel like a wound should be covered and the first isn't an option.

There has to be something I can do to help it - I know there will be some effect, but just to keep it as good looking as possible and still be in the water - what do I do? My artist won't tell me anything. Is it safer to cover it or leave it out in the open is what I'm asking, I guess.

Here's a pic of the fresh tattoo Smile Looks even better now!

Get yourself some Aquaphor to cover it with before you get in the water, be sure to wash it with antibacterial soap as soon as you get out., by hand only, continue to use a very slight amount on the tattoo as needed to keep it moist. Your tattoo would have been almost completely healed by now if you had been using this product from the beginning.

I actually used Aquaphor in the beginning like my artist said and I got a bad rash. I read that a lot of people are allergic to petroleum which is the main ingredient so I stopped using it and started just using fragrance free lotion & now my rash is gone away...I did use the Aquaphor for about 4 days though and it is pretty well healed to my knowledge, but I'm not postive. Should I use it for an hour & then wash it off? Confused

The biggest thing will be when you get out. If you still have any scabby/flakey skin, it will be saturated/spongey/soggey. Pat it dry. Do not just wipe it off. If the tattoo is pretty well healed, you'll be fine. I passed out in the bathtub once the night after I got a tattoo for like 3 hours. It was fine enough...

thanks guys! i covered it with tattoo goo, saran wrap, gauze, and huge band-aids and taped it down as per the advice of a friend who has tattoos and works in the pool. barely faded & still looks great Smile i did wash as soon as i got out too - turned out fine!

Next time plan better. I wouldn't be comfortable going into a body of water for at least 4 weeks afterwards. Not just speaking about maybe ruining the artwork but also you have to realize it's an open wound, if any water touched it at all then the chance for infection was there.

Id say wrap it in saran wrap or put a bag over it.

There's no way for me to plan around it. I was lucky to be out of the water for 8 days [thanks to 4th of July weekend]. My job is teaching kids how to swim - I have bills to pay & I can't afford to take time off. I don't think you'd take off 4 weeks of work if you were in the same position :/ The tat looks fine - my friend swam with her tattoo and never had a problem. Mine has already scabbed up and healed so I don't see any problem with it Smile The chance was there, but I covered it and washed it immediately after I got out of the pool.
