hey, first time poster, ive had this idea to get a tattoo for awhile now and im pretty set on it so i checked out a new local shop cause i wanna support local business. The tattoo itself is just the block roman lettering XVIII proportional to this font, about five by two and a half inches right above my forearm.
As for my question, i walked in off the street and asked for a quote on the price, the owner said about 120. Am i getting the shit end of the deal here? is it proper etiquette to haggle with him? any advice is appreciated, thanks.

$120 seems about right to me and probably a pretty good deal for what you described. you sound as if you think this is too much money to spend on something that 1.) will last the rest of your life, and 2.) something that you want to look good. just curious, what's the XVIII- your age?

there is more to getting a tattoo costwise than the time you are sitting in the chair having your tattoo applied. i wouldn't kick sand at this deal.... there is no reason why you can't attempt to haggle, just be prepared to be told not a chance.

Are you getting XVIII because your 18 what happens in November when you turn 19? Or is it more deep like the first time you got laid when you were 18. sounds pretty lame to me good thing tattoos are not permanent oh wait never mind. $120 sounds about right.

considering you dont seem to know what the approximate costs of certain tattoos would be I would suggest not haggling with the artist.

As for the 18.... lets give him the benefit of a doubt and hope that maybe its his birth date not his age?? maybe??

most of the time when i give someone the benefit of the doubt, they let me down....i'm thinking it's his age....just a feeling i have.... Wink ...

to the OP, i wouldn't suggest haggling on your first tattoo....what i would suggest is that you stop thinking about the cost and start thinking about what you want tattooed on your hide for life and find a good artist to do the work....if cost is the only issue, then please wait or be willing to settle for something you won't be happy with....think about it....it's gonna be with you for a long time....$120.00 isn't much for a tattoo but if that's the defining factor, then by all means, go for whatever you can get.... tattoos always seem expensive the first time around

120 bucks i can get drunk with that for like a week.. lol

seems like a good price, judging by that price im guessing its a nice shop

i would be worried if they charged you about 40 bucks for it, then thats sketchy

thanks for the advice everyone, it isnt that im a total tightwad or anything i just wanted to be a smart about it. In response to your questions yes it is my age right now my reason for getting it is to symbolize a commitment to myself to be a better person and own up to the decisions and responsibilities that come with being an adult. My goal is to get the tattoo after i lose twenty pounds (down five already) so it will motivate me to get on the right track as well as stay on it.

$120 an hour i'd say is a good rate per hour for an above average artist. If that's too high then try finding someone that apprentices under that person or another artist within that same shop. The tattoo doesn't seem to be that complex any tattoo artist should HOPEFULLY be able to tattoo straight lines.

Shop around, it's a buyers market. But always refer to the above rule.

Did you really just suggest that?

Aesthetically? I do writing on forearms all the time. It's fine and dandy, but, if you ever want to sleeve out, the block letters will invariably go against the flow of said sleeve work.

As far as the price, I'd assume anywhere between $95-$150 in our area, depending on the final size and how the lettering itself is done.

Dear, I love tattoos on my shoulders but when I went to shop to get it on they told me the price that was not affordable for me. So tell me what to do now or address of some cheaper shop.

nice post hijacking!

Once I figured out what the hell you were saying...

What you should do is WAIT! and save up the money to afford it. If you're going cheap, your're gonna get a shitty tattoo and probably a disease.
