I'm 17 years old, and have been wanting a tattoo for quite a while now.

My mom has said to me that once I get the money together, she will gladly take me, however, I'm not sure how many places in my area would do it, even with consent.

I live on the north shore of Massachusetts, so anything in southern NH or eastern, northern mass is reachable, Boston, too ofcourse.

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Smile

Surely you can wait another year till you're 18?

While googling I came across this:

Here's the law itself for Massachusetts

(A) No tattooing, piercing of genitalia, branding or scarification shall be performed

on a person under the age of 18.

(B) Body piercing, other than piercing the genitalia, may be performed on a person

under the age of 18 provided that the person is accompanied by a properly

identified parent, legal custodial parent or legal guardian who has signed a form

consenting to such procedure.

It seems like you're out of luck with that tattoo. Think hard about what you really want. Research, research, research. Then if you still want it when you're 18 then go.

Read the stickies at the top of the forum. It helps.

Apparently there is no parental consent in New Hampshire either. If you're up for a bit of a drive, It looks like Connecticut has consent laws. You can check out the different state laws here:

First things first.

Have you decided on a design or specific tattoo that you wanna get yet?

If so, what would that be?

Then, you need to concentrate on finding the "perfect" artist to do that tattoo. Some may have a waiting list of weeks, to months, to even a year depending on who and what you wish to get.

Once you know exactly what you want, and who you want to do it all you have to do is ask that person if you can get it with parental consent or if you have to wait until you're 18.

Either way it's much more important to find the perfect artist, and the perfect design than to be in too much of a hurry.

Anything you try to rush in this regard will most likely result in a less than perfect tattoo.

Take your time. Go to many shops. That's a lot of fun in itself.

Just remember, who does your tattoo, and what you get is way more important then when.

I put the word perfect in quotes for a specific reason.

It's totally subjective. Meaning, for every person the "perfect" shop might be different.

If you want something very specific like a Japanese style piece, or a portrait, or maybe bio-mechanical, any old shop in podunkville probably won't cut it.

If all you are looking for is low quality basic flash then sure, just find any-old place that'll fit you in. Rolling Eyes

Most people shouldn't think that way. I'd like to assume the original poster has at least some standards for quality and safety.

You, Fire Chief, are perfectly allowed to let anybody with a tattoo gun wail away on your skin. Please post pictures of all the tattoos you have.

Wow Queef, your wisdom astounds me. so i've been doing it wrong this whole time. I'll just ditch my artist with his year long waiting list and walk into the first "mutha fucking respectable" shop that can get me in the chair straight away. fyi ANY shop can be considered "respectable" depending on who you talk to, the shittiest scratcher shops can have great reps in the right circles so portfolio shopping and if it comes to it, long waiting lists, are an important part of getting a good tattoo. but of course since you've got so many you already knew that....idiot.

I think that it is awesome that your Mom supports your desire to get a tattoo! Follow the advice of the regulars here and you won't go wrong. Post a picture when you finally get one Smile

Its commonplace for kids that age to curse alot these days though unfortunately- its not until they grow up a little and have to face the real world and actually become deal with other people that they start learning how to be respectful and the slowing starts to slow down to a trickle- at least among people who have an ounce of intelligence.

I cursed alot more in high school than I do these days- the only thing I curse about now is stupid people in traffic.

My sister's 24 and she still cusses like a sailor. But back on topic, Maryland tattoos people 16 with parent consent. And but my sister's fiancé has an uncle that tattoos so I could get mine now being 15. Hopefully my parents let me. If they don't I'm doing it anyway LOL.
