For my first tattoo, I really want it to be something I would never regret, something that's really sentimental. I decided that I wanted to get a picture of Cuba, with my last name under it.
My father, and that entire side of my family, was born and raised in Cuba, meaning I'm part Cuban myself. My family means more to me than anything, though I rarely show it. They've been there for me, watched me grow, and taught me a lot over the years.
I figure since I can't express the love I have for where I came from in words, I could do it through this art. I made the design myself, and I've planned it out for a long time.
However, over half the people, including close friends, that I have gone to with my idea, tell me it's "dumb" or "stupid" and that getting Cuba and even my family name is ridiculous.
Some say "Well my family is from this place and you don't see me getting a tattoo of it."
This tattoo is supposed to be representing my family, my ancestry. I honestly don't see how any of that is "stupid".
I've never listened to the negative things that people say and I've never let anyone influence me in such ways. I've always gone by my instincts alone. But with so many people against my idea (an idea that could scar me for a lifetime), I'm really having trouble with this.
I figured I should get some outside opinions, maybe from people with similar tattoos or someone who knows another with one. |

Well, I don't think your idea is stupid at all. I would really like to see what you've got going, though (could you throw up a pic of what you're thinking?). This could be totally stupid or really cool, depending on what kind of person you are, but I know if I was Cuban, I'd be damn proud of those cigars  . I'd incorporate one of those babies in there.
On the other hand, if you get Cuba AND your family name, that could be redundant (if you're doing Cuba for the fam, no need for the name, as well, ya know?). I'd keep the Cuba idea, I really like that... if it was done well. If you can, try to put a picture up  . I think you're off on the right foot. |

Here's a picture of what I had in mind. And sorry, I blurred out the name because I'm paranoid and there's no telling what kind of creeps are on here. Plus, it's a VERY uncommon name.

Don't mind all the different colors, I'm still deciding that.
Also, here's something I was thinking of doing maybe later on, after a few years or something, not sure. It's the country's flower. (Don't mind the crappiness. Don't want the exact picture, just something similar)

Yeah, about putting my family name on there, I was thinking about waiting a while for that. I'll probably end up changing my mind about it and not do it. It's always good to take small steps anyway. |

Well if you are taking a poll I think it looks really stupid, with that being said it's not going on me it would be on you and who gives a fuck what other people think. If you want it get. just make sure you find a good artist to do it.
A good artist can take the crappiest idea and make it look good(well almost).

There are a few ways to look at tattoos. One is informational. Like tattooing an animals ears for identification. That's kind of what you're doing. There's also tattooing for purely aesthetics. Then there is also a combination of both. That's what you should shoot for. As a tattoo the shape of Cuba is not too exciting. It will end up looking like a blotch after a few years. Can you think something that represents Cuba to you without being so obvious? The Cuban flag? I like humorous tattoos so I'd get a banana. That's just me.

I do tattoos in this vein a lot (typically with Ireland, Germany, or Italy, but that's neither here nor there). I wouldn't say it's a bad idea in the least. Hit up a shop, talk to an artist and tell them your idea. They'll help you decide on a final color scheme and a font for the name that will translate the best to a tattoo. Best of luck, hope it works out well and turns out great!

Maybe instead of having those swirly colors in the outline, you should have the cuban flag. :S
