(Note: Would post this in tattoo artist forum, but still waiting to get validated.)
A potential client emailed our shop wanting to know if we use vegan friendly inks. They read this article http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/263163/tattooed_vegan_101_you_may_be_vegan.html?page=2&cat=7
and were concerned. Not being a vegan myself, I've never really been concerned with animal by-products like glycerin, because they don't harm the client. I'm just not sure if the inks I use contain such items. I currently use Intenze, and Eternal Inks. Anyone know? This seems a little extreme even for vegans, but I can bitch about vegans over all self-indulgent behavior in another forum! |

i'm not a tattoo artist but my girlfriend's a vegetarian slash on/off vegan and this came up between us once so i've looked into it before.. .
the conclusion i came to was that most but not all brands have animal byproduct in them. eternal ink was one of few that claimed to be animal free. i'd probably call them up and double check, though. _________________

Ask the vegan if they drive a car. All oil is animal byproduct. When they are driving down the street at 10 dead animals per gallon it's kind of silly that they concern themselves with a few drops of carbon. _________________ Scientists have known that what grows on a gamer's face is different from that of a man's.

| I tell vegans my inks have animal byproducts in them so I don't have to work on them. |

99% of glycerin is animal-based. I've never seen an ink that could VERIFY that it was 100% vegan to back up its claims. To be honest, it's really not a concern to me (nor should it be to ANYONE) _________________ Just a small guy trying to get by... |

These responses are great. I will just tell this person I can't verify, and if they want to go somewhere else then they can keep searching.
A quick note, my wife likes to watch the fashion shows on Bravo. Apparently there was a vegan who insisted on wearing only vegan friendly clothes. She refused to wear silk because its a by-product of worms. WTF? The worms probably get treated better in the warehouse than they do in nature. You almost want to punch a vegan in the face, but the funny thing is, they're doing more harm to there body with the lack of protein than you could ever do with a knuckle sandwich. Go figure.
Shit I said I would save the Vegan hate fest for another topic, so I will stop. |

yeah all this stuff doesnt matter, people will use the ink they use, not because they get it for a good price, or it doesnt matter what kind of ink they use
but because artist use a certain type of ink, and rarely disclose the ink to the public, inks tend to stay a secret. Pretty simple, our inks are really bright, and stay bright, we wont do a tattoo with any other ink, just because we dont know how those inks will hold up over time, and were not about to risk making a bad tattoo _________________ www.myspace.com/eulaliatattoo |

| When I lived up in the PNW I knew several vegans. They're not so bad. they're actually kind of passionate people and I like that. But it is so fun to make fun of them. There are some who only eat fruit and veggies that offer themselves. Like an apple that drops. They won't eat something that has to be cut. Too tragic. I worked with a vegan that ate potato chips all day. No silk, no leather, no honey...Like Sphen said their life runs on oil. There's probably some oil in the machines that make their Tofurky. Not too mention the animal shit used for fertilizer to grow their precious veggies. What about the bees pollinating? Better not enjoy those flowers. I could go on and on. |

The thing that kills me the most is vegan parents who will not let their children eat meat. Kids who grow up on a strictly vegan diet become malnourished and it can stunt their growth. Adults are fine on a vegi only diet, but kids need that protein as an essential building block. It's a choice forced on them by their parents and they will have to deal with it their whole lives because their mom and dad chose an existance with their head in the ground. _________________ Scientists have known that what grows on a gamer's face is different from that of a man's.

This is true.
You won't find a vegan ink, though you may find many that claim to be vegan (and cannot prove it).
Not gonna happen. Tell your vegan customer to stop being a blubbering vagina, imo. I like Sphenoid's oil comment. _________________

Oh dear, I think I have to put in my 2 cents here.
I've been a vegan since I was 13 years old. (I'm 23 now) I realize there are some weird vegans out there, as well as some stupid ones. My rational for this is that A) A lot of vegans are young people just being crazy passionate about something because they have all those extra hormones and shit and B) Most of the human population is stupid.
Veganism to me isn't about perfection. I don't care if there's some animal by-product in tattoo ink as long as it is safe and as long as it's used responsibly and sentient beings aren't killed needlessly and frivolously for us to have pretty tattoos on us.
The idea that vegans do not get enough protein is a myth. As I said, I've been vegan for a decade and I am very healthy, good skin, hair, muscle etc. And men can be healthy on a vegan diet as well, my boyfriend of 4 years has been a vegan for 5, he is very healthy... There are many people who go vegan simply for health reasons, because it really is a diet that is much easier on many people's bodies. I'm not saying it's for everyone, and that eating meat is bad, but it is not a harmful or "stupid" lifestyle whatsoever. It is also not done in order to make others feel guilty---at least not usually! That would be silly.
I have educated myself for the past decade on health and nutrition in order to know as much as I can about the human body and how diet effects it as well as to stick up for myself when people try and warn me I'm going to be malnourished any day now from being a vegan...
I think it's good for people to try and be as conscious as they can about both what they are putting into their bodies, as well as where it came from. There's nothing wrong with that person asking what was in the ink. For my first tattoo I asked what was in the ink not because of animal products, but because I wanted to know if there were carcinogenic pigments like cadmiums and prussian blue... that sort of thing.
I've been accused of being a "stupid Holier-Than-Thou vegan" several times in my life. Like any stereotype... it's a stereotype. I hope I don't come off as really defensive here, I just want to share how I feel about the topic of veganism because, well, it's a subject I know a lot about and I just want to dispel some bad information.

| My buddy drew a big sign and hung it at work. He wrote the "Vegan Militia" and a jolly roger below it but instead of bones or swords crossed beneath the skull he drew in two carrots. |
