Greatest version of "My Way" ever.
Also, what better to sing along with while drinking than "Frigging in the Rigging"? _________________ "The creation of mankind was the act of an egomaniac, plain and simple"

| Although I must admit Sid was good, he was a way better singer than he was bass player like, but without rotten that band would have been nothing |

It's funny how a girl could have a crush on a puny, pasty, zit-faced, heroine addict who died years before she was even born.
Don't get me wrong, I loved the Pistols (still do, and I'm old enough to remember their one all too brief US tour, though I was too young to attend). I thought Sid was the coolest thing since sliced bread, but let's face it, he was a walking trainwreck and not exactly ideal boyfriend material. _________________ Matt Crunk

If you are a sex pistol fan, watch the movie Sid and Nancy. I thought it was pretty good. |

sid and nancy movie - I heard of that and was gunna watch it but i thought it wise to see if rotten had written a review on it and after reading what he wrote (quoted below)in his 1994 autobiography, Rotten: No Irish, No Blacks, No Dogs: I thought it would be a waste of time.
"I cannot understand why anyone would want to put out a movie like Sid and Nancy and not bother to speak to me; Alex Cox, the director, didn’t. He used as his point of reference - of all the people on this earth - Joe Strummer! That guttural singer from The Clash? What the fuck did he know about Sid and Nancy? That’s probably all he could find, which was really scraping the bottom of the barrel. The only time Alex Cox made any approach toward me was when he sent the chap who was playing me over to New York where I was. This actor told me he wanted to talk about the script. During the two days he was there, he told me that the film had already been completed. The whole thing was a sham. It was a ploy to get my name used in connection with the film, in order to support it."
"To me this movie is the lowest form of life. I honestly believe that it celebrates heroin addiction. It definitely glorifies it at the end when that stupid taxi drives off into the sky. That's such nonsense. The squalid New York hotel scenes were fine, except they needed to be even more squalid. All of the scenes in London with the Pistols were nonsense. None bore any sense of reality. The chap who played Sid, Gary Oldman, I thought was quite good. But even he only played the stage persona as opposed to the real person. I don’t consider that Gary Oldman's fault because he’s a bloody good actor. If only he had the opportunity to speak to someone who knew the man. I don’t think they ever had the intent to research properly in order to make a seriously accurate movie. It was all just for money, wasn't it? To humiliate somebody’s life like that - and very successfully - was very annoying to me. The final irony is that I still get asked questions about it. I have to explain that it's all wrong. It was all someone else’s fucking fantasy, some Oxford graduate who missed the punk rock era. The bastard."
"When I got back to London, they invited me to a screening. So I went to see it and was utterly appalled. I told Alex Cox, which was the first time I met him, that he should be shot, and he was quite lucky I didn't shoot him. I still hold him in the lowest light. Will the real Sid please stand up?"
"As for how I was portrayed, well, there's no offense in that. It was so off and ridiculous. It was absurd. Champagne and baked beans for breakfast? Sorry. I don't drink champagne. He didn't even speak like me. He had a Scouse accent. Worse, there's a slur implied in the movie that I was jealous of Nancy, which I find particularly loathsome. There is that implication that I feel was definitely put there. I guess that’s Alex Cox showing his middle class twittery. It’s all too glib, it’s all too easy." |

As I said above I think he was good looking, I feel he was miunderstood by people and no one really knew the real Sid.
He was a messed up, confused guy that needed guidance and direction, Nancy was his un-doing, she introduced him to heroine and that wouldn't have helped him as he was fragile and easy to manipulate.
There will never be another Sid

the sex pistols suck.
saying sid was good is retarded. he never learned how to even play his bass.
IMO, jumping around like a fool pretending to play isn't punk.
Rotten is a pissah though. He's really the only one I mildly respect because he even turned against his own 'flock'. That's punk rock.
Now, it's so fucking saturated and weak that it's not even worth discussing. Listen to Black Flag if you want pissed off punk, listen to the Sex Pistols if you want hair and makeup styles. _________________ please don't call it a gun. guns kill people.

Ok, since NO ONE else has said it, I will :
They were a fuckin' boyband. Plain and simple. They were the Backstreet Boys. They were New Kids on the Block. They were N'Sync.
Malcom Mclaren owned a clothing store in London. It was for "fetish gear" and what became later known as "punk" style. That said, he wanted a band to play the local pubs, in his clothes, to work as a sort of "free advertising". That said, he picked the best looking kids that hung around his shop, and they became the Pistols. Malcom dressed them up, booked them gigs, and told them to do the most outrageous stuff they could think of, because it would get them (and him, and his clothing store) noticed. Bottom line : They were "made" to sell clothes.
All this talk of Sid? Yeah, Johnny got him into the band after Malcom formed it, simply because he was better looking and was more of a "character". That's it. Hardly what I would call amazing.
I'm not saying he wasn't a tragic character, no, far removed. He was an under educated kid with below average intelligence that was thrown into the limelight and didn't have the mental capacities to make good decisions. That said, he justy couldn't say "no" to all of the readily available drugs, and that (coupled with an abusive relation with Nancy) killed him. No one should die in their early 20's. That said, he died "while he was hot", so he became an "icon" and a "martyr" so to speak.
Seriously, I like a handful of tunes from "Never Mind the Bollocks...", but, compared to their "77" contempoaries like The Clash, The Ramones, or Sham 69, they were abismal. Seriously.
That said, I can't agrue that they don't hold a plce in rock'n'roll hostory. The bands that they influenced are obvious and apparent, and they did seem to shake things up from 77-78, so, for that, I'll give them their just due.
Now, beyond that, was their sound "revolutionary"? Certainly not. They took the sound of the Ramones, added in a bit of the British pub and glitter rock going on at the time, threw in a dash and The Stooges and MC5, and VOILA! The Pistols!
Now, their IMAGE? Yes, that was a bit more "revolutionary". I still see guys with hair and clothes like Sid and Johnny, and still see guitar players that look like Steve Jones on stage. Their LOOK was incredible. It was thought out, and it was aHUGE selling point (more-so, really, than the music in question) for the band.
Final Summation : tI think they were an "alright" band with 1 good album (and 1 album that can best be described as an acid trip). Like I said, other punk bands are head and shoulders better and more influential, but the Pistols do deserve their place in the annuals of rock'n'roll. _________________ Just a small guy trying to get by... |

I agree Sid couldn't play bass, he wasn't that bothered. Rotten wanted him in the band becuase he wanted a mate with him who had a personality and he did have the right attitude and style.
Unfortunately he turned into a train wreck who couldn't handle the attention and the limelight.
But u are forgetting that back then, their music and sound was totally different to anything else and made it possible for bands like black flag to be accepted!
I have total respect for the pistols. They made punk what it is and they were from London in UK so they are gunna have a place in most British hearts alot more than Americans coz their songs are based on British humour and attitudes. |

BLACK FLAG - ARE U SERIOUS?????
Oh wait they were formed in California USA!
Now it makes sense u get their humour I don't think I'm alone when I say I don't think they're good. Jerk??? Do people really use that word???
and Beserk???
just sound abit weird tbh.
And they weren't original they even admitted they nicked their style from the Ramones! |
