Hello ladies and gentleman, I just recently started on my half sleeve... and I'm really unsure which direction to go with it. I know that I'd like to stick with the Day of the Dead/Beautiful dead theme, but not sure of what other elements I'd like to add... So I was hoping y'all could toss me some ideas to play with, I'm mainly looking to do 2-3 other large pieces, and have the rest as filler... I mainly prefer the old school style, and I like portraits thinking maybe some Sugar Skulls, maybe another Sylvia Ji girl... Not sure, I'd like an outside opinion, my brain hurts from thinking about it. Pictures are below...

I don't really have any ideas, but just wanted to say I really like the way it's turning out so far, I find it incredibly striking.

maybe you could like a gothic cross or something like that! Maybe you could add a roseary to the lady tying into the Spanish day of the dead since they are Catholic! But it looks good keep me updated

I'm not a huge fan of the piece. If you're happy with it though, thats all that matters.

I think that some dancing mexican skeletons would be awesome.. but that doesn't sound like the way you were planning on going.

sorry, but i think while you can probably get away with it from afar, it looks pretty atrocious close up. the hair has no tonality whatsoever. it's like sharpied on. the jawline is especially bad and so are the eyes.

Not sure what I'm doing with her, I've got to go back in for some touch ups, and will be adding more detail to the flowers, and finishing up a few spots + adding some personality to it, I just wanted to get the foundation down. As for the hair not having any definition, it is true to the piece of art it came from. Most Sylvia Ji, has no/very little shading in the hair, it is how I wanted it. All opinions/suggestions are appreciated though. I really like the idea of dancing skeletons, haha. I may have to incorporate that.
Some examples:

Also, dancing skeletons = awesome.

staying "true to the piece of art" is not usually the right solution if you want the best tattoo possible. instead an artist should recognize what will/won't translate well then make adjustments.. i think that's the time to "add some personality".
